Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Although the title page has the date 1824, the copyright page and "Editor's Preface" clearly indicate that this volume was published in 1827. The first edition of this book was published in Boston in 1716, and the second edition was published in Newport in 1772. This volume was based on the 1772 edition and contains therefore the phrase "Second Edition with Plates." The first edition edited by Drake appeared in 1825, and he indicates that the 1827 edition was necessitated by the earlier edition being sold out. Drake's editions contain "Numerous Notes" and "An Appendix." Full leather. Wear at the head of the spine, a chip at the foot of the spine, wormline on the rear cover, a tear on the blank front free endpaper, a long chip on the rear blank endpaper, spotting on pages 232, 262, and 2909, otherwise internals surprisingly nice with no foxing, Good.

First published in Boston in 1716, Church's History of "King Philip's War" was reissued in 1772. Samuel G. Drake, the editor of the nineteenth century editions, worked from the 1772 edition to prepare the 1827 edition.** With the Revised Edition of 1845, the editor worked to correct the text based on "more recent publications of high authority," and he changed some "obsolete and objectionable words and phrases." While Samuel Drake was aiming for an authentic and valuable contribution to Indian History, he acknowledged that "the interesting personal narrative of Col. Church will doubtless engage the attention of the reader."** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only.
