Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 352 pp. with bibliography. Light edgewear. "This volume includes sixteen papers and seven introductions discussing elements of Aboriginal identities and the various ways in which non-Aboriginal governments delimit those identities for their own purposes. The various identities of Aboriginal people in Canada are determined both by the people themselves and by regional and national governments. Very often those structures created by the state to define Aboriginal identities fail to take account of the perceptions which Aboriginal people have developed of themselves and their societies. Moreover, state structures tend to change over time, through such devices as treaties, agreements, legislation and constitutions. These changes in turn affect the views which Aboriginal people hold of their identities. A series of scholars, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, examine these issues in fourteen reprinted papers and two original contributions. Although most papers refer directly to Canada and Canadian matters, several of these works outline the similar concerns of Aboriginal people and nation states in the USA, Australia and Norway. This book provides basic readings on Aboriginal people and questions of identity for students taking introductory courses in Aboriginal Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Women?s Studies, Social Work and other disciplines. It should be of interest to all persons concerned with the imposition of identity upon individuals by the state, and to all those challenged by such contemporary issues as Aboriginal government, human rights and the survival of small societies.".
