First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very good plus. Minnie Evans, Harry Trevor, Pip Benveniste, Peter Schmidt (illustrator). 1st Edition. 24pp stitched in illustrated card covers (priced rear, 7/6 or $2.50); 380 x 257 mm. The undated final issue of Joseph Berke's provocative journal (issued 1971), constituting "a major re-evaluation of the nature of paranoia". Beautifully designed by Asa Benveniste (Trigram Press) & impeccably executed by Juliet Standing at her Daedalus Press (two colours throughout) in an edition of 1500 copies (50 signed). Following the second issue (March 1968) numbers 3-9 comprised a single 418pp anthology, Counter Culture: The Creation of an Alternative Society (1969: Peter Owen), making this the third of three periodical-format numbers. The present issue includes an article by Mary Barnes on her experiences at Kingsley Hall, 1965-70 (a prelude to her book with Dr Berke, Two Accounts of a Journey through Madness, 1971); as well as a disturbing found play on lobotomy by the editor, 'I Canna Hear the Buggas No More' (with instructions extracted from a popular textbook of psychiatry). Also poetry by Vo Van Ai, Calvin Hernton, James McCann, George Montgomery & Susan Sherman together with a lengthy article by Morton Schatzman entitled 'Paranoia & Persecution; The Case of Schreber' (pp4-12). The cover paintings by African-American visionary folk artist, Minnie Evans of North Carolina (1892-1987), were contributed by artist-curator Nina Howell Starr following Minnie's second major gallery exhibition in New York (August 1969). A nice copy.
