First UK edition hard back binding in publisher's original colour illustrated paper covered boards. 8vo. 9½'' x 7''. Contains 64 pages of colour illustrations with text around. Due to the success of Dr Seuss' books, an independent publishing company was formed, called: Beginner Books. When he first began writing and illustrating children's books, Theodor Geisel combined 'Dr.' and 'Seuss,' his middle name, which was also his mother's maiden name, to create the pseudonym 'Dr. Seuss.' Theodor Seuss Geisel, became the president and the editor. Rubbing along the bottom edges of the boards. Very Good condition book in Good condition dust wrapper with 40 mm closed tear and related crease lines to the foot of the front cover, chips and tears to the spine ends and corners. (The later printings were bound in all yellow cloth with no red panels and show lettering in red). "1939" date with no subsequent printings listed, and two previous title listings printed as "Other juveniles by Dr. Seuss: AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET; THE FIVE HUNDRED HATS OF BARTHOLOMEW CUBBINS" to the copyright page. The dust jacket is not necessary to identify the first printing for this title. A decently-preserved and rather bright copy. Light rubbing to the covers, upper corners bumped, a touch of rubbing to the upper and lower spine edges and corner tips, small mild eraser spot at the upper edge, and some minor browsing impressions to the lower edge of the pages, a few faint soil spots to the page margins, else very good plus in waxed yellow linen with deep-red panels showing reverse yellow titles to the front and rear covers, red end-sheets with a vignette illustration depicting a crown and stilts to the front and rear end-papers; lacking the dust jacket.
