Illustrated with 48 steel plate engravings done by a long list of contributors including well-known engravers of the day. Engravings show popular actors and actors from the London stage in various roles. This is the U.S. edition of this set, done in many editions in London by Virtue. Ther eis no date, but likely it is late nineteenth century. All plates are present, as are their protective pages. Marbled endpapers with doublures. There is no writing or marks on the inside of either volume. Pages are generally without foxing, with the exception of the protective pages for the engravings, which are foxed, but have done their job. There is No foxing in the image of any of the plates. Boards are well attached and bindings are tight. There are some handling marks on some pages. Volume 1 condition is Very Good-, scraping and scuffing on the edges of the leather, tiny leather tears at the top and bottom of the hinges both front and back. Volume 2 is in Good- condition, has tattered leather at the top and bottom of the spine, general scraping and scuffing on the leather, leather is rubbed through to the board on the back lower corner.
