Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st edition ; xiii, 446 pp., 1 leaf ; illustrated ; LCCN: 42-18716 ; OCLC: 1166562 ; LC: RD118; NLM: WP 910 ; "Max Thorek (1880-1960) was born in Hungary. The murder of his brother during a pogrom that occurred in the spring of 1897 persuaded his family to leave Hungary. They immigrated to the United States in 1898, and settled in Chicago. Thorek earned money as a violinist while he attended the University of Chicago. Although he had no prior knowledge of the snare drum, he talked an administrator at the University of Chicago into granting him a full scholarship as a drummer for the University band. Thorek was thus able to enter Rush Medical College in the fall of 1900, which was then affiliated with the University of Chicago. He received his medical degree in 1904 from Rush College. Thorek worked in obstetrics, general, and reconstructive surgery. His innovative techniques and practices are still widely used in surgery today. He founded the International College of Surgeons in Geneva in 1935 and the International Museum of Surgical Science in a Chicago Gold Coast mansion in 1954. Thorek was also an internationally acclaimed amateur photographer during the pictorialist movement, and author of several books on the subject, including "Camera Art as a Means of Self-Expression (1947) and "Creative Camera Art" (1937). Thorek benefited the lives of his many patients, students, and colleagues. He not only taught doctors to be better surgeons, but his inquiries and experiments led to profound developments in many different areas of surgery, especially in internal medicine. Thorek was primarily known for his innovative operation for removing the gallbladder. His refinements to operations on the breast and abdomen improved plastic surgery, and his book Plastic Surgery of the Breast and Abdominal Walls helped make plastic surgery a respectable part of medicine." ; name on front ep and bookplate of John Ransom Lewis, MD, the one-time Poet Laureate of Georgia ; Contents : Anatomy, histology -- Embryology -- Histophysiology -- Historical, developmental and comparative considerations -- Physiology of the breast -- Folklore surrounding the female breast -- Racial characteristics -- Congenital anomalies of the breast -- Hypertrophies of the female breasts -- Etiology, symptoms, course and complications of breast hypertrophies -- Gynecomastia -- Indications and contraindications for reconstructive surgery of the female breast -- The technic of plastic operations for hypertrophy and penulosity of the female breast -- Scars and keloids -- Amastia, hypomastia and inequality of the breasts -- Diseases of the nipples -- Reconstructive surgery of the abdominal wall. ; textured red cloth with gold lettering ; no dustjacket ; foxing, edge wear ; numerous photographs of nudes from around the world, illustrations of surgical procedures, instruments, etc ;"This book provides the early history of breast reconstruction and the surgical methods of breast reconstruction " ; VG.
