Book First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Antonio Fransconi, woodcuts. (illustrator). First Thus. 58 pp, 10" H. First published in 1962, this is the first printing of a new edition illustrated with b&w and rust coloured woodcuts by Antonio Fransconi. "Recognizing that Yentl seems to have the soul and disposition of a man, her father studies the Torah and other holy books with her. When he dies, Yentl feels she no longer has a reason to remain in her village, and so, late one night, she cuts off her hair, dresses as a young man, and sets out to find a yeshiva where she can continue her studies and live secretly as a man. On the road she meets Avigdor, who invites her to come to his yeshiva. Yentl - now calling herself Anshel - agrees, and they study together. Avigdor suspects nothing and the two become close friends. Even so, Yentl begins to realize the folly of her actions: her quest for spiritual satisfaction has hopelessly entangled her in a life that is too emotionally and physically taxing to maintain. She must choose to live with her impossible situation or reveal herself and risk losing Avigdor forever." Dust jacket is price clipped, has minor edge wrinkling.

"Yentl the Yeshiva Boy" is a short story by the Polish-born American writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. It concerns a young woman who pretends to be a man in order to escape marriage and pursue religious studies. The story was originally published in Yiddish in 1962. Singer's own English translation was first published in 1983. A Broadway stage adaptation premiered in 1975 and a film adaptation, directed by and starring Barbra Streisand, followed eight years later.
