Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. xii+[5 plates]+[1]-291 with plates, tables, maps (some folding), bibliography and index. Quarto (11 1/2" x 9 1/4") bound in original publisher's red boards with dark red label with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Third printing. The Vinland Map, dated to about A.D. 1440 at least fifty years before Columbus landed in the Americas is a unique map of the world that shows an outline of the northeast American coast and a legend describing its discovery in about 1000 by Leif Eiriksson, the Norseman from Greenland. The map was published by Yale University Press in 1965 and generated an enormous amount of debate. Chemical analysis of the ink later suggested the map might be a forgery, but recent appraisals of both scientific and humanist evidence argue that it is indeed authentic. "Because evidence concerning the Viking discovery of North America in the tenth and eleventh centuries is so incomplete, investigation of this area of history will be substantially aided by the discovery of new documents. Such is the claim made for the previously unknown manuscripts here published for the first time. They are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen.; 9¾" - 12" Tall.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of selected poems from three renowned English poets: John Skelton, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey. These poets helped usher in a new era of English literature during the Tudor period, moving away from medieval influences and towards a more refined and sophisticated style. The poems in this collection showcase their unique talents and explore themes of love, loss, nature, and the human condition. Skelton's satirical verse wittily critiques the follies of society, while Wyatt and Surrey's sonnets and lyrics express the complexities of courtly love and personal experience. Together, these poems provide a captivating glimpse into the literary landscape of 16th-century England and the enduring power of poetic expression. First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Our first offering in this lot, "Drawing the Line," a trade paperback "First Edition -- 1995," deals with gerrymandering and continental drift, and offers a lengthy discussion of the controversy surrounding Yale's supposedly medieval "Vinland Map."' Symmetrical number line 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. The publishers contend they remove BOTH the numeral 1 and the "First Edition" statement from a second printing -- they're obviously wrong, and we conclude this is a first (trade paperback) printing. Geography. 368 pp. including Index. Reduced from $12. OUR SECOND OFFERING, here, is a "good" 1966 Yale University hardcover in a "good" dust jacket. "The Vinland Map and the Tartar Relation" states "Fourth printing April, 1966." (First was 1965.) A "good" quarto with a 5/8-inch rough spot to bottom corner of front board (possible kitten chew) in a "good" price-clipped dust jacket which is chipped to edges. Fold-out maps intact. Though they are later copies of much earlier originals, these maps (circa 1440) are cartographic evidence that distant lands -- including North America -- were known to at least some Europeans far earlier than imagined, the authors conclude. But controversy arose immediately upon publication of this effort -- issued essentially simultaneous with the announcement that alumnus Paul Mellon had purchased the map for a reported $300,000 for donation to the university -- and by 2019 specialists at Yale, where it is still held, declared that the latest scientific and historical research has established the "Vinland Map" to be a modern forgery. 291 pp. including index. The pair of books on related topics now reduced from $24.
