From front cover: Handbook for Identification, Stripping & Assembly, Service & Maintenance, Illustrated Parts Lists, Accessories & Spares, Historical Memoranda, Additional References. Provides information on the details and operation of the weapons. Ian Skennerton was born in Marlborough, Qld., Australia in 1948 and schooled at Redcliffe until 1964, and then won a scholarship to the Conservatorium of Music. An orchestral clarinet & saxophone player, Ian graduated from the Conservatorium with performing & teaching diplomas for piano and clarinet in 1968. Ian was drafted into the Australian Army in 1969, serving in Vietnam in 1970. After discharge from the armed forces, Ian studied service arms in England during 1980-81, and catalogued arms and filed records at HM Tower of London & RSAF Pattern Room, Enfield. He was awarded research grants by the Australian War Memorial in 1975 & 1987-89 and has authored and published about 100 titles on British & Empire arms & edged weapons since 1976. Ian was awarded the annual medal by the British Arms & Armour Society in 1995, and recently nominated a Fellow of the Australian Institute for History and the Arts in 2008. Raymond "Ray" Riling (1896-1974), a Philadelphia builder and arms collector, was an important arms book collector, dealer, author and publisher from the 1940s into the 1970s. Riling's annotated bibliography Guns and Shooting, New York: Greenberg, 1951, although issued and reprinted (in 1982) in limited editions (of 1,500 and 500, respectively), remains in wide use as the standard reference in the out-of-print arms book trade. It contains over three thousand numbered and chronologically-arranged descriptions of books related to small arms from the fifteenth century through 1950, as well as several other useful lists. Similarly, his Powder Flask Book (1953) is the standard reference in the collecting field of later antique American powder flasks . Riling's wife, Beatrice Davis Riling (1904-1962), collaborated on these works. The Ray Riling Arms Book Co. no longer remains in the mail order business. The M1917 Enfield, the "American Enfield", formally named "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917" is an American modification and production of the .303-inch (7.7 mm) Pattern 1914 Enfield (P14) rifle (listed in British Service as Rifle No. 3) developed and manufactured during the period 1917-1918. Numerically, it was the main rifle used by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. The Danish Sirius Dog Sled Patrol on Greenland still use the M1917, which performs reliably in Arctic conditions, as their service weapon. Before World War I, the British had the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) as their main rifle. Compared to the German Mausers or U.S. 1903 Springfield, the SMLE's .303 rimmed cartridge, originally a black powder cartridge, was ill-suited for feeding in magazine or belt-fed weapons and the SMLE was thought to be less accurate than its competition at longer ranges. The long-range accuracy of German 7×57mm Model 1893 and 1895 Mausers in the hands of Boer marksmen during the Boer War (1899 -1902) made a big impression on the British Army, and a more powerful, modern rifle was desired. Thus, even though improved Lee-Enfield variants (the SMLE) and .303 British Mark VII ammunition with pointed (spitzer) projectiles entered service after the Boer War in 1910, a committee was formed to develop an entirely new design of rifle and cartridge. The starting point was to copy many of the features of the Mauser system. The rifle was developed at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield (arsenal) in the United Kingdom. This development named the Pattern 1913 Enfield or P13, included a front locking, dual lug bolt action with Mauser type claw extractor as well as a new, powerful rimless .276 Enfield cartridge. The design carried over a Lee-Enfield type safety at the rear of the action and a bolt that cocked on closing to ease unlocking of the bolt during rapid fire. An advanced design, for the era, of aperture rear sight and a long sight radius were incorporated to maximize accuracy potential. Ease of manufacture was also an important criterion. However, the onset of World War I came too quickly for the UK to put it into production before the new cartridge could be perfected, as it suffered from overheating in rapid fire and bore fouling. As it entered World War I, the UK had an urgent need for rifles, and contracts for the new rifle were placed with arms companies in the United States. They decided to ask these companies to produce the new rifle design in the old .303 British chambering for convenience of ammunition logistics. The new rifle was termed the "Pattern 14". In the case of the P14 rifle, Winchester and Remington were selected. A third manufacturer, Eddystone Arsenal - a subsidiary of Remington - was tooled up at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pennsylvania. Thus, three variations of the P14 and M1917 exist, labeled "Winchester," "Remington" or "Eddystone".
