Es dauert nicht lange, bis er ernsthaft mit seinem Ausbilder, Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, aneinandergerät. Während dieser auf seine ganz eigene Art versucht, ihn zum Mann zu formen, muss Mayo sich auch mit anderen Gefühlen auseinandersetzen, als er sich in die Fabrikarbeiterin Paula verliebt, die davon träumt, als Ehefrau eines Offiziers ihrer trostlosen Lage zu entkommen. Foley erwischt Zack bei Betrügereien und will ihn durch allerlei Schikanen zum Verlassen der Ausbildungseinheit zwingen, doch dieser hat keine andere Perspektive im Leben. Mayo ändert sich und wird teamfähiger. Trotz aller Widerstände beendet er die Ausbildung erfolgreich, als melodramatischen Höhepunkt der Handlung betritt er schließlich in Galauniform die Papierfabrik und trägt Paula unter dem Beifall der anderen Arbeiterinnen auf Händen aus der Werkshalle. In einem weiteren Handlungsstrang verliebt sich sein Freund Sid ebenfalls in eine Arbeiterin der Papierfabrik. Diese ist allerdings nicht an ihm selbst, sondern nur an einem Leben als Offiziersgattin interessiert und lässt ihn nach Scheitern seiner Ausbildung eiskalt fallen. Sid bringt sich daraufhin um.
