On February 24, 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed "An Act authorizing the President of the United States to accept the service of a number of volunteer companies, not exceeding thirty thousand men" during the Second Session of the Ninth Congress; the following year Van Rensselaer, the long-serving adjutant general of New York Militia (1801-09, 1810-11, 1813-21), who later served as lieutenant colonel in the War of 1812 and as representative in Congress (1819-22), petitioned the federal government to accept one such volunteer company. DS, 4pp (2 leaves), 8" X 12½", Albany, NY, 15 November 1808. Very good. Mild edgewear and bit of age toning, but overall quite attractive and quite legible. Clearly marked "A Copy" at upper left of first page, most of this first leaf consists of the proposal that "The Brigadier Generals will proceed" to organize "the Detachment from the several Divisions" and listing regiments from the artillery, cavalry and infantry that will comprise the new company and other details. This is followed by a full and accurate transcript of the entire act signed into law by Jefferson, all five sections occupying the lower portion of this first leaf, all of the second and third leaves and a portion of the fourth, concluding with "Th. Jefferson" (not, obviously, in Jefferson's hand). The document concludes with "We the subscribers officers non-commissioned officers musicians and privates of a Comany [sic] of _____ in the County of _____ and State of New York do hereby associate and offer ourselves as volunteers to the President of the United States in conformity to General Orders of the Commander in Chief of this State. in testimony whereof we have hereunto severally subscribed our names the _____ day of _____ 1808." This draft copy, complete with the four blank areas noted above, is signed large and bold at the conclusion solely by Van Rensselaer, who adds "Adjt Genl" below. Although just a secretarial draft or file copy, this is a fascinating and unusual behind-the-scenes glimpse into the administrative process for getting a proposed new militia company approved by the federal government.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
No Binding. Condition: Good. This letter, written in October of 1815 to Solomon Van Rensselaer's friend and colleague, George Tibbits, describes General James Wilkinson's "Memoirs of My Own Times" as "the most interesting [publication] I think of any thing that has appeared for many years in this country." Van Rensselaer was helping promote the book around New York State and proudly claimed "In this City alone I procured one hundred and twelve subscribers since yesterday at 10 o'clock, and more will be procured." He hoped Tibbits would "put the prospectus in motion in Troy and Lansingburgh." Van Rensselaer signed boldly and with a bit of flourish after closing "I am very respectfully your obedient servant." Written in Van Rensselaer's bold, clear hand on one page of a full sheet of paper measuring approximately 10 1/2" x 16 1/2", folded in half to create an integral address leaf. The letter was docketed near the seal. Solomon Van Vechten Van Rensselaer (1774-1852) was an officer in the US Army and Congressman from New York prior to becoming Postmaster of the City of Albany. George Tibbits (1763-1849) was a politician at both the State and national levels, in addition to his business ventures in Troy, New York, the city where he was also mayor for several years. James Wilkinson (1757-1825) was an American military man and statesman, but was involved in a number of scandals over the years. After his death, there was a final scandal when it was revealed that he had been a paid agent for the Spanish Crown. Condition: There are several creased fold lines and some light toning and soil, as well as a small amount of paper loss and staining near where the seal was placed. There is a larger (approximately 2" x 2 1/2") area of paper loss from the blank margin of the page with the address panel. None of the loss affects the text of the letter or the signature, and it would display quite nicely. Signed by Author(s).

A notorious episode in Albany's political history, these trials were the result of a street brawl between a group of Federalists and Jeffersonians. It was initiated when Rensselaer attacked Jenkins from behind with his walking stick after an argument over the fate of Irish rebels seeking admission to the United States. Cooper, Tayler and Bloodgood joined the fight. Jenkins was awarded $2,500.00 in damages. Bloodgood would later become mayor of Albany. Tayler, later a judge, went on to become lieutenant governor of New York. Taylor and Cooper, a judge, were involved in the controversy that precipitated the Hamilton-Burr duel. The street map shows locations of relevant sites and the positions of witnesses. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 14363.
