282 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chinese calligraphy, music examples, 2 color plates. "Tz'u originally was written to music to be sung; the word itself means 'song words' in Chinese. While the literary aspect of tz'u is derived from the five and seven-syllable lines of regulated verse or shih, its musical element can be traced back to the triumph, in the early T'ang dynasty, of popular foreign songs over native ones. Tz'u, in fact, is an overflow of shih. When T'ang poetry could no longer express adequately man's more refined and delicate feelings, and when the simple quatrains could not longer contain the spirit of song, it was natural for a new genre to emerge. The approach of the present volume of essays and translations of tz'u is an intimate rather than a pedantic one, for its purpose is to take the poetry-loving reader, as it were, by the hand, and welcome him into a new world. It is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of tz'u poetry, its intrinsic qualities as well as the achievements of individual writers. Through the nine interpretive essays and the eight translations of individual tz'u poets in the present anthology, the reader will gain a deeper in sight in to tz'u poetry and see its continuity in the history of Chinese literature."
