Fascinating 18th-century memoir of a Scottish officer serving with the Scots Brigade--in the employ of the Dutch--in Surinam during a slave insurrection. Stedman recounts irregular warfare against the rebels, as well as his observations of the people, customs, wildlife, and vegetation of the exotic land in which he and his comrades found themselves. Attractively bound in quarter blue cloth with paper label spine titles and marbled boards. Blue topstain. Some discoloration to spine labels, but volumes in otherwise near fine condition with light edgewear. Contents clean and bright with numerous reproductions of illustrations and maps made by Stedman (some fold-outs). Books housed in very good lightly edgeworn matching slipcase. Signed by Editor.
