Card Covers. Condition: Fine-. Twentieth anniversary catalogue issued by the famous midtown Manhattan bookstore and cultural landmark, one of 500 unnumbered copies in spiral binding, from a total edition of 5,500. Introductory notes by Frances Steloff and Kay Steele, Gertrude Stein, Samuel Putnam, Dudley Fitts, William Carlos Williams, and Whit Burnett. Crown 8vo (197 x 134mm): 3-88,[2]pp. Wire-bound pictorial card covers (as issued), featuring Carl Van Vechten's photograph of Ruth Bower's painting "The Life of the Party at Finnegans Wake," created to celebrate publication of Joyce's novel in 1939. This copy reputedly from the inventory of Gotham Book Mart and never circulated. Regardless, a superb survival (barely rubbed), tightly bound and clean throughout. Sales catalogue no. 42 for more than 1,200 items, featuring first editions, presentation copies, letters, and manuscripts, as well as little magazines and anthologies of American, English and Continental authors, with personal recollections and commentary from prominent critics, including Kay Boyle, John Dos Passos, Sherwood Anderson, Dorothy Norman, and Ezra Pound, on an array of Modernist authors. The catalogue is credited with helping to shape the Modernist canon. Beyond merely selling books, Gotham Book Mart, opened by Steloff in 1920, served as literary salon, hosting meetings of the Finnegans Wake Society and the James Joyce Society, poetry and author readings, and art exhibitions, with Steloff distributing copies of banned books, including Lady Chatterley's Lover and Tropic of Cancer. The store specialized in poetry, literature, and books about theater, art, music, and dance. It sold both new books and out-of-print and rare books. N. B. Nice set, catalogues, several being quite early, from the iconic New York bookstore, the Gotham Book Mart. Frances Steloff (1887-1989) founded the store in Midtown Manhattan in 1920 and it quickly became a center for literary modernism in the U.S. Besides carrying modern and experimental lit, press books, and art, Steloff also published works in these genres, including by Andre Gide and Wallace Stevens. These catalogues stand as an important reference for modernist movements in the country in the first half of the century. They include: 1. Catalogue Eleven: Modern First editions and Private Press Books, [Ca. 1929] 2. Catalogue Thirteen: Modern First Editions, 1930 3. Catalogue Fourteen: Art Catalog, 1930 4. Catalogue 16: Modern First Editions, Private Press Limited, & Association Items (1931) 5. List 23: A List of Books by Modern Authors of Insurgent Tendencies [Ca. 1931?] 6. Catalogue Twenty: Good Books at Readjusted Prices [Ca. 1932?] 7. List 27: Fifty Good Books at Attractive Prices, [Ca. 1932?] 8. Catalogue 36 [Ca. 1936] 9. Catalog 39: The Book-Collectors' Odyssey or 'Travels in Realms of Gold,' (Winter, 1938) 10. Catalogue 40: Film File, (Spring, 1938) 11. Gotham Book Mart: Spring 1957 12. Gertrude Stein: A Catalog, 1964 . 10 catalogues and 2 lists, varying sizes and paginations. Catalogues are staple bound in printed wrappers, one list is a small trifold brochure, the other a 10x7" bifolium. Generally very good or better with typical wear and toning and a few scattered stains.
