Nach seinem Studium der Luft- und Raumfahrtechnik arbeitete er zunächst als Anwendungsentwickler. Seine Dissertation zur Modellierung von Rissfortschritt in Metallen fasste er am Max-Planck-Institut für Werkstoffwissenschaften ab. Danach hatte er verschiedene Positionen bei General Motors inne: Nach einer Tätigkeit in der Entwicklung, in der er für die rechnerische Auslegung der Crash-Tauglichkeit von Fahrzeugstrukturen und Rückhaltesystemen verantwortlich war, war er Projektleiter im Plattform-Management. Danach wechselte Stephan Kohlhoff in den IT-Bereich und leitete mehrere Projekte im SAP- und Nicht-SAP-Umfeld.
