First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition. Small quarto, 256pp., illustrated. A musty copy, with some mild edgewear, and a few droplet stains to the bottom edge; very good. In a near fine dust jacket with a few tiny tears. Quite uncommon volume of essays, poetry, and visual art which explores contemporary artistic expression by Black women, mostly in the United Kingdom. The book grew out of the Blackwomen's Creativity Project, which Sulter co-founded with photographer Ingrid Pollard. From Sulter's Preface: "Living in the aftermath of slavery and enforced migration the very notion of Black family life comes under constant external pressure. Section 28, anti-homosexual legislation, the erosion of the Welfare State in the UK, rising homelessness, immigration controls and current attempts to legislate against the autonomy of single mothers all mitigate against home life." Contributors include Bhajan Junjan, Delta Streete, Dionne Brooks, Lubaina Himid, Nialah, Nina Edge, Olusola Oyeleye, Robyn Kahukiwa, Roshini Kempadoo, Sutapa Biswas, Veena Stephenson, and others. The first edition in dust jacket is truly scarce in commerce.
