First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 365pp. Stapled mimeographed copy. Report prepared for Manpower Administration, US Department of Labor. At the time of the report, Betty Lee Sung was Chair of the Department of Asian Studies at City College of New York. She held the position from 1970 until her retirement in 1992, making her work and tenure a prominent part of the development of Asian Studies programs in the US. Her parents were Chinese immigrants, and the experiences they related to her, as well as her own lived experience with racism and discrimination while living in Washington, D.C., prompted Sung's conviction that the lives of her family and people like them were worthy of academic study. Her work as a broadcaster with Voice of America, and her work as a scholar and writer, consistently challenged stereotypical assumptions about Asians in America. Chinese Manpower & Employment in America utilizes cultural analysis, as well as demographic research and graphic projections via population maps and more, in the service of explaining the experience of Chinese immigrants and citizens in the US on educational, geographic and career grounds. Praeger published a version of the book the following year, but both published book and preliminary report remain scarce. 8vo.
