Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), xiv + 171 pp. Fine (As New); in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: Until recently, Spanish literary historiography has virtually ignored hundreds of women who wrote between 15-- and 1700. Most of them wrote to record, defend, and disseminate their spiritual visions, for despite the general disempowerment of Spanish women, female visionaries enjoyed considerable authority. This book recovers and examines the visionary experiences of Mother Juana de la Cruz, the most famous of these women during her lifetime and for two centuries afterwards. Born of peasant stock, she became abbess of a Franciscan convent and a mystic who was visited not only by Cardinal Cisneros, but by Emperor Charles V himself. Ronald E. Surtz places Mother Juana's visions in the religious and social context of their age and discusses such pertinent biographical elements as the nun's own androgyny. His focus is on the questions of gender, power, and authority, so pertinent to our own age. The Guitar of God will be of particular interest to scholars and students of late medieval Spanish culture, religion, and history, and women's studies. Women's History, Women's Studies, European History, Spanish History, Spain, Religion. nslic.

Book Signed Print on Demand
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. IN STOCK--NOT PRINT ON DEMAND. Fine. Issued without dust jacket. Hardcover in maroon cloth stamped in silver. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. 223 pages, with index. Despite some claims to the contrary, 16th and 17th century Spain had a wealth of female authors. These women are all but unknown for several reasons: nearly half of them were nuns whose works were written for "in house" use and not intended for publication. The most famous of these was Teresa of Avila whose autobiography "Vida" was published posthumously six years after her death. This superb study focuses on five of these female authors---Teresa of Cartegeha, Constanza de Castilla, Maria de Ajofrin, Maria de Santo Domingo, and Juana de la Cruz.
