Leather. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this important historical autobiography about Richard Baxter, living during a fascinating period of English history including the English Civil War, here edited by Matthew Sylvester. An important historical work. The first edition of this work. A scarce work, not often seen at auction. ESTC citation number R16109. Bound without frontispiece. Otherwise, work is complete. Signatures run as A2, b-d4, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa4-Lll4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, Aaaaa4, A-Q4, R2, A-C2, S-T2. Leaf S1 of the index is mislabelled M. With an appendix and index. 'Reliquiae Baxterianae' is an unrivalled primary source for those looking into early modern history, and ecclesiastical, literary, and cultural studies. A foundation text for eighteenth century historiographical and ecclesiastical traditions. This work is considered by many to be one of the masterpieces of early autobiography. In the autobiography, Baxter accounts first-hand events from the 1620s to the 1680s, from an interesting standpoint as Baxter was a Puritan churchman, an especially interesting viewpoint during the English Civil War. At the outbreak of the war, Baxter actually blamed both parties and recommended Protestation. However, he lived in a Royalist stronghold, and ended up having to move around a lot during the War. He joined the Parliamentarians, though only for his religious interests. In the work, Baxter recounts his meetings with Cromwell, Charles II, Sheldon, and Clarendon, and shares his opinions and views on these influential men. However Baxter doesn't just focus on politics, as he was fascinated by individuality, psychology, and temperament, offering a very interesting insight into the prominent figures of his time. The opinions shared in this work were an early contributor to the literary civil war that later prompted the 1688 Glorious Revolution. Baxter was a prolific theological writer, and was an influential leader of the Nonconformists, and spent time in prison. He had controversial views on justification and sanctification, and he emphasised the necessity of repentance and faithfulness. The work was edited from the manuscript and published here for the first time by Matthew Sylvester, who was an English nonconformist cleric. From 1687, Baxter work as Sylvester's unpaid assistant. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, sound. Rubbing to the boards and spine, resulting in some loss of paper. Very small crack to the head of the front joint. Small amount of leather is lifting to the tail of the front board to the extremity, and to the head of the rear board to the extremity. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned, with some pages being age-toned heavier, with the odd mark and odd spot. Title page is restored. Small patch of worming to the first few pages, from leaf A2 to d1, affecting three words only, though with no loss. The occasional prior owner's ink lines to the margins. Small light tidemark to the tail of many pages of the appendix. Loss to leaf P4 to the margin, affecting only two words lightly. Closed tear to the margins of leaves K4 and P4. Good. book.

ELISHA'S CRY AFTER ELIJAH'S GOD CONSIDER'D AND APPLY'D, WITH REFERENCE TO THE DECEASE OF THE LATE REVEREND MR. RICHARD BAXTER. Who left this Life Decemb. 8th, 1691. An Preach'd in Part on Decemb. 18th, An. Eod. Being the Lord's-Day, At Rutland-House in Charter-house-Yard, London. London: Printed for T. Parkhurst, J. Robinson, J. Lawrence, and J. Dunston, 1696. 18pp + [8] (Alphabetical Index). Richard Baxter (1615 - 1691) was an influential Nonconformist English theologian and church leader. Baxter refused an appointment as Bishop of Hereford in protest of the Act of Uniformity 1662 (which demanded government and church officials adhere to the rites and public prayers prescribed by the Church of England). He was subsequently expelled from the Church and arrested. Nevertheless, his influence in the Nonconformist movement grew both substantially and controversially. Matthew Sylvester (c. 1636 - 1708) was also a member of the Nonconformist movement. A cleric and writer, he is mainly remembered as Baxter's literary executor. His "Reliquiæ Baxterianæ" is noted for both its theological importance and poor editing (Sylvester transcribed much of the work himself and many errata have been noted). An abridgement to the work was issued later by Edmund Calamy, Sylvester's former assistant.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Complete Vol. is tight and almost no foxing. Frontispiece engraved by Robert White. Missing some leather on front cover and is quite loose but still attached. Some page corners are nibbled the back of the book is attached to the spine and has some missing leather as well. Some writing on inside of front cover from 1894 some more writing from 1792 on the next pg. by John Hudson. The book measure 13 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches deep. The 800-page folio consists of autobiographical papers, with supporting documents, written in the main in 1664, 1665 and 1670-85, covering the seventy-year period from Baxter's birth in 1615, most expansively the years following the restoration of monarchy and Charles II's return in 1660. Its editor was the nonconformist minister Matthew Sylvester (1636?-1708). This book is an unrivalled primary historical source for seventeenth-century English political, religious, social, cultural and literary history. Baxter offers a first-hand account of events at the highest level (he met, and comments on, Cromwell, Charles II, Clarendon, Sheldon) but he is also (particularly through his ministry) a witness to the experiences of a great range of provincial members of the mercantile, clerical, artisan and agricultural classes. The Reliquiae is a foundation text for eighteenth-century ecclesiastical and historiographical traditions. Its vindication of moderate Puritanism and its accounts of the early nonconformists passed Baxterianism on to eighteenth-century dissent. In this respect, the Reliquiae was an early contributor to the literary civil war prompted by the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688/89 to determine the master narrative of seventeenth-century English history. Baxter's was one of the most acute intelligences and complex personalities of the period. He was fascinated by individuality, by temperament and by psychology, his own as much as others'. The Reliquiae is rich in sharply realised and acute characterisations and in passages of remarkably perceptive self-scrutiny and reflection, leading to its being hailed as one of the masterpieces of early autobiographical writing in the English tradition and as a key text in the development of both historiography and autobiography as distinct literary genres. The Reliquiae is the most significant and substantial seventeenth-century work of personal record never to have received scholarly editorial attention. Much of this info obtained from the University of Stirling.
