Hard Cover. Condition: Fine-. First published by Mnachester University Press in 1956, this book is the reprint of that edition, 295 pages, with folded map. "The Russia Company was established 400 years ago, and has a special claim to consideration and of commerical activity. It seems to have been the first fully incorporated joint-stock comapny in England, and in many respects its financial and commerical arrangements anticipated future developments in the organization of foreign trade. The early records by the Russia Company itself were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The history of the company in the sixxteenth century has, therefore, to be written from a wide range of scattered sources." FINE- HARDCOVER, red cloth covers, lettering is bright on the spine and cover. Previous owner's name is present. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Manchester: Printed for the Chetham Society, 1980. Octavo. 163pp. Hardcover. Very good in publisher's cloth and pictorial dustwrapper. "Despite a growing interest in urban history, few modern studies of individual English towns in the sixteenth century have appeared. Professor Willan presents an analysis of the economic and social life of Elizabethan Manchester, already a centre for both the linen and woollen cloth industries. These produced a class of wealthy clothiers which was joined by well-to-do shopkeepers who found their customers in both the town and its hinterland. The less wealthy, especially the really poor, remain obscure, but Professor Willan shows the physical setting of the homes in which men of all classes lived and the ideas they had about the disposal of their possessions at death. Manchester had a class of clothiers, merchants and shopkeepers which was surprisingly rich by provincial standards and was an important regional centre that had trading connections not only with its immediate hinterland but also with other provincial towns and with London." (Publisher's blurb).
