Hardcover. x, 149 p.; 19.5 cm. (Kellogg lectures ; 1960 -- Lowell lectures -- Birks lectures) `In the days of President Remsen B. Ogilby, whose capacity for fun-making was boundless, two men gave a table to Trinity College, Hartford, on which he suggested that they put an inscription from Psalm 55:15. In the Prayer Book Psalter this reads, "We took sweet counsel together and walked in the house of God as friends." As the donors turned to their King James Bible, however, they read, "Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell, for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them." The problems which the Psalms present are much more numerous than any difference in numbering. In the verse just mentioned, should hell, with all its connotations of days long after the psalmists, be empolyed to translate the word Sheol? Quick means alive, not rapid. Why use archaic language? But, more pertinently still, have Christians today any real justification for using this type of imprecation al all?' (p. v) Good ex-lib. orig. black under citron boards.
