Privately tutored, Ten Eyck was prosecuting attorney for Burlington County from 1839 to 1849 and was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1844. A Whig until 1856, Ten Eyck then became a Republican and was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served from 1859 to 1865. A nice ink signed autograph on a slip of paper: "Jn. C.
