This copy of "Theocritus, Bion, and Moschus" , translated, edited, and with an Introduction by classicist Andrew Lang (of world-wide fame for his series of colored "Fairy Books"), and published by Macmillan in its "Golden Treasury Series". This petite hardcover is a 1932 reprint, far down the road from the book's first publication in 1880. Theocritus , Bion, and Moschus were Bucolic (pastoral) Greek Poets who were of considerable influence to Roman Latin poets. ***************************************** This book came form the personal library of deceased poet - Translator Bruce Berlind, who was Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Colgate University. He was well known for his translations of Hungarian poets, as well as for his own poetic works. Professor Emeritus of English at Colgate University (1926 - 2014) / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Contains Lang's Introduction, and his notes; xlii + 210 pages , plus 2 pages of publisher's list. 3 7/8" x 6 1/8"; dark blue, cloth-covered binding, with gilt lettering and simple line embellishment on spine; an image , stamped in gilt, of a young boy playing a pipe adors the front board (centrally placed). *************************************** CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - This is a previously owned book that remains, clean, solid and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: Professor Berlind was a smoker, and traces of that fact may linger in the book. / EXTERIOR -- The spine displays a sort of scatter - splash damp stain - this extends, vaguely, onto the rear board (hence the condition rating); the gilt on the spine is still bright; spine extremities are compressed, and display a touch of abrasion; the front board has mild surface rub and a small dent at the joint, else clean, with bright gilt; the rear board, aside from the just perceptible damp stain, has modest surface rub. Board corner tips are softly bumped. Text-block edges are lightly toned, else clean. / BINDING -- Solid / INTERIOR -- End-papers are toned; re: Professor Berlind's signature on the front free end-paper; else the book is clean and free of marking, writing, or marginalia.

Housed in custom-made slipcase. Vellum boards wrinkled with some spotting along bottom edge of volume II. Bindings are sound. Dampstaining along bottom edge of many tissue guards; pages otherwise unmarked. Overall a Very Good, attractive set.
