Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. edge wear to boards, corners bumped, some dye bleed on top page ends; Three great books in one hardcover. Dr. Tom Dooley, in his brief lifetime, richly earned the title, "The Splendid American." He went about helping his fellow man in underprivileged parts of the world, particularly in southeast Asia. DELIVERY US FROM EVIL: Dooley covers his service on board the U.S.S. Montague, his work at a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city of Haiphong, and his ties to a Vietnamese orphanage. Particularly fascinating are Dooley's details about the complex effort involved in building and sustaining the refugee camp. THE EDGE OF TOMORROW: Flanked by a multitude of witch doctors, with practices dating back to the Middle Ages, Dooley financed and ran a hospital that lay 5 miles from the border of communist Red China. His tiny 35 bed hospital was just the beginning of a new system that left the people healthier, and trained many of them to continue the work he started long after he was gone. The book is filled with stories both cheerful and gruesome of his exploits among these uncomplaining people who learned to live with suffering so appalling I cringe to even think back upon it. THE NIGHT THEY BURNED THE MOUNTAIN: This book is a chronicle of his second stint in the country, up until he was diagnosed with the cancer that ultimately took his life. Dooley demonstrated that the way to defeat communism and win the hearts and minds of the people of Asia was to heal their bodies. By providing medical care without political strings or pronouncements, Dooley worked closely with the Laotians and his team consisted of three American medics operating within a Laotian hospital.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. jacket in tatters, some edge wear and soiling to boards and page ends; Press, radio and television have made Dr. Dooley a world-famous figure. His humanitarian work has won him acclaim everywhere. But he is modest about the attention he gets. "Look," he says, "Every time someone snaps my picture, it means medicine on my shelf. Every time I get on TV, nickels and dimes come in for the hospital." Here is the amzaing story of how Dr. Dooley and a tiny staff set up two jungle hospitals in Laos, five miles from the edge of the bamboo curtain--hospitals where they continue to fight disease and communism with antibiotics and understanding.
