25 copper-plated engraved pieces of sheet music printed in black. Most sheets hand-foliated in ink. With the ownership signature in ink on the back of songs 9 and 10 written "Susan Buchanan's." 9 of the pieces of sheet music are loose, 16 are loosely bound together. Provenance: Family of Founding Father Francis Hopkinson 25 pieces of sheet music printed in Ireland by Hime at the end of the 18th century, from the family collection of Francis Hopkinson, America's first composer. "American society from about 1805 on was especially enamored of Irish and Scotch tunes, particularly the Irish Melodies of Thomas Moore, and other national music." - Richard J. Wolfe, Early American Music Engraving and Printing Founding Father Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791) was a signatory for New Jersey to the Declaration of Independence and the first American to compose a song, which he attested to himself: "I cannot, I believe, be refused the Credit of being the first Native of the United States who has produced a Musical Composition." Hopkinson published three of the earliest American song collections: Collection of Plain Tunes with a Few from Anthems and Hymns, printed by Carr in 1763; America Independent, or Temple of Minerva (the first American opera), printed by Carr in 1781; and Seven Songs for the Harpsichord or Forte Piano, printed by T. Dobson in 1788. All sheets were printed by Hime. Hime was an English and Irish music publishing firm run by two brothers, Humphrey and Morris. Hime began in Liverpool, but moved to Dublin in 1790. The firm continued printing until the 1870s as Hime & Son. The Himes did the largest provincial trade in Britain at the end of the 18th century because English copyright law did not apply to Irish publishers, so Hime could flood the English market with bootleg copies of popular songs. The song titles are: 1. "TEARS THAT EXHALE: An admired SONG in the PRISONER Composed by Mr. Attwood." 2. "I'D THINK on THEE MY LOVE. A Favorite NEW SEA SONG Composed by Mr. HOOK." 3. "HENRY's COTTAGEMAID." 4. "AS WRAPT IN SLEEP I LAY: A favorite Song sung by Mrs CROUCH in the Opera of The PIRATES Composed by STEPN STORACE." 5. "WINDS SOFTLY TELL MY LOVE: As Sung by Mrs MOUNTAIN in the Opera of the FARMER with uncommon Applause." 6. "THE MANSION OF PEACE: A Much Admired SONG Composed by Mr. WEBBE." 7. "THE NEW MANSION OF PEACE: A Favorite NEW SONG Composed by Mr. MOULDS." 8. "DEAR MARY TO THEE: A much Admired NEW Song Composed by Mr. HOOK." 9. "DEAR IMAGE OF THE MAID I LOVE: Composed by SIGr. GIORDANI." 10. "WHILST WITH VILLAGE MAIDS: A favorite Song in the Opera of ROSINA Sung by Mrs BILLINGTON." 11. "COME BLUSHING ROSE: Composed by Pleyel." 12. "EVENING: A Favorite BALLAD Composed by HAYDN: The WORDS by DOCr. JOHNSON." 13. "EDWIN AND ELLA: Composed by MR. HOOK." 14. "GO HAPPYGALES: A favorite SONNETT translated from PETRACH by Mr HOOK." 15. "ENCOMPASSED IN AN ANGELS FRAME: A much Admired Song." 16. "THE SHIPWRECK'D BOY. A Favorite NEW Song Written by Geo. Saville Carey." 17. "THERE THE SILVER'D WATERS ROAM: An admired Song in the PIRATES. Sung by Mr Sedgwick. composed by Sigr. STORACE." 18. "Charming Delia: A Favorite BALLAD Composed by Mr. PLEYEL." 19. "DIRE IS HIS GRIEF: An Admired Song in the new Historical Romance of the CRUSADE sung by Mr Incldeon." 20. "NOW THE WOODLAND CHORISTS SING: A Favorite PASTORAL BALLAD composed by J PLEYEL." 21. "O!EVER IN MY BOSOM LIVE: A favorite Duett in OSCAR and MALVINA sung by Mrs Mountain and Miss Keys." 22. "DEAR IS MY LITTLE NATIVE VALE: A favorite NEW Ballad." 23. "YOUNG JOCKEY TRIPT IT O'ER THE MEAD: An Admired BALLAD Composed by SIGr PLEYEL." 24. "BLOW HIGH BLOW LOW: A favorite SONG." 25. "WHEN FAIR SUSAN I LEFT: A much Admired SEA SONG." These scores were part of a Sammelband acquired at the Francis Hopkinson Family Americana Collection sale in June 2020. Wolfe, Early American Music Engraving and Printing, 1980. Folio. ff. 25. [38]pp. Folio. Modern backstrip over contemporary marbled boards, label and endpapers renewed. Corners worn, boards rubbed. Minor foxing and toning, some dampstaining. The second page of "The Moment is Sad" is lacking, otherwise complete. Good. A wonderful collection of early American sheet music, mostly American imprints, most printed on two pages. The printers of these early sheets include some of the most notable names of the period, such as Hewitt, Graupner, Blake, and Paff. Dichter & Shapiro, in the Introduction to their EARLY AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC, include these four publishers in a list of names they deem "eminently worth while." The highlights of the songs within the book are as follows: 1) Fortune, Michael: "Jefferson & Liberty. A New Song. To the Air of Jefferson's March." Philadelphia. 1801. First edition. The most notable music sheet in this collection. Fortune, an Irish immigrant, wrote the song to commemorate Jefferson's election and sent Jefferson a copy of the song. The music was published by the first American antiquarian bookseller, N.G. Dufief, who at the time he published this was trying to sell Jefferson Benjamin Franklin's library for the Library of Congress. For whatever reasons (jealousy? self-interest?) Jefferson turned him down, and Dufief auctioned it in 1803. Perhaps Dufief hoped to advance his sale by sponsoring this publication. Very rare, with only one copy listed in OCLC, at Oxford University. WOLFE 4607. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 734. 2) "The Downfall of Paris." Boston. [1806]. First state, with no page number. One printed page of music, with no lyrics. WOLFE 2737. 3) "The Battle of the Nile: A Favorite Patriotic Song." Philadelphia. [ca. 1804]. First printing by this publisher. A paean to Nelson's victory over Napoleon in Egypt. WOLFE 461. 4) Mozart: "Away with Melancholy." New York. [ca. 1795]. An early printing of this song, an excerpt from THE MAGIC FLUTE. SONNECK & UPTON, p.35. 5) Briggs, Edward Smith: "A Hindustani Girls Song. Tis thy will and I must leave thee." New York. [ca. 1800]. "Soon a british fair will charm thee, thou, alas! Her smiles must woo / but tho' she to rapture warm thee, don't forget thy poor HIN-DOO." SONNECK & UPTON, p.188. 6) [Gaveaux, Pierre]: "La Pipe de Tabac. A Favorite French Song." New York. [ca. 1800]. Not in Wolfe. SONNECK & UPTON, p.332. 7) [Gaveaux, Pierre]: "The Dish of Tea or Ladies Answer to the Pipe Tabac." [New York. 1802]. WOLFE 2896. SONNECK & UPTON, p.110.

No Binding. Condition: Good. Five in-house exploration maps, various editions and dates, sized @53-58 x 64-74cm, 1:200,000 (some scales are stated incorrectly as 1:100,000 or 1:2,000,000). Four of the sheets adjoin one another in Eastern Province, with Qidam (NW), Qatif (NE), Hofuf (SE), and En Nala (SW), while Jabrin in Hasa Province sits 2 rows below En Nala. Very good with some short closed tears, pinholes, notes and marks. These are very rare survivors, with Worldcat listing just one each of Qatif (1953 at Harvard) and Hofuf (1981 at LoC). Compiled from ground and air surveys, this series gradually updated Aramco's early field maps, covering its most important sites and installations, including traditional and ancient routes and settlements. They are highly detailed, with features including power lines; roads, camel tracks; rail; villages; buildings; date gardens; wadis; sabhka; surveying features; water wells; observation wells; gas injection wells; oil wells; water injections wells; abandoned wells; suspended drilling wells; abandoned oil wells; observation water wells; observation gas wells; pipelines; cultivation; irrigation and drainage canals; intermittent streams; mines and quarries; spot heights and notes on terrain. (1) F-1142 JABRIN QUADRANGLE, 1 Jul 1940 (latest rev 29 Dec 1953), JW Thomas, GS Sheets, checked by Thomas Barger. Located in the Rub al Khali 200 miles south of Hofuf at the edge of the Jafurah desert, it marks the start of the "Road to Dhahran" at a small cluster of Arab water wells near Faraid el Idhbatiya. This road runs north via Camp Jabrin where Barger (Aramco's future President and CEO) had been based in Feb 1940 during his early desert tours. The area remains very undeveloped with isolated airstrips, numerous trig stations, and notes (eg "many slumps, this area not mapped in detail"). A fragment of track is labelled "ancient big camel trail". Similar unlabelled lines may be old caravan routes, one of which crosses El Ghazaala Airstrip. // (2) F-1226 QIDAM, Feb 1963, First Edition. This includes parts of the Fadhili and Ghawar Fields, the latter discovered by Barger and Max Steineke with the help of Bedouin guides. In 1963 Fadhili and Khurais came on stream and work started on the vast Ghawar field. // (3) F-1260 QATIF, Mar 1953 (latest rev 17 May 1981), ML Stapleton, checked by CW Philips. This includes several important installations: Abqaiq, Dammam, Ras Tanura, Al Khobar, Nejma, Safwa, and Tarut Island. Extensive development is reflected in dense infrastructure, pipelines, transmission lines etc, an "abandoned town development" near Abqaiq, the Royal Saudi Air Force Gunnery Range, and pipeline link with Bahrain. // (4) F-1160 HOFUF, May 1958 (latest rev 6 Nov 1971). Centred on the vast Al Jafurah gas field this shows the major Saudi centre of Hofuf in Hasa Oasis, Abqaiq, and part of Bahrain. Features include the Govt Railway, water supply wells, and Gunnery Range. Among the camel routes are Darb Mikhyat into Hofuf, the route from inland to the ancient port of Uqair shown on the coast, and coastal trails. // (5) F-1224 EN NALA, June 1958 (latest rev 18 Sep 1973). This includes major developments at Ain Dar and Uthmaniyah, various lines connecting Khurais, Abqaiq etc, and part of the Govt Railway. It is criss-crossed by traditional routes among them Darb Mazalij (Musaliq) which eventually reaches Riyadh, Darb Mikhyat, Darb al Arari and Darb Edh Dhaayini.
