First Edition
Hardcover. Foreword by John Collier. Small 4to. Pale blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 151pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, line drawings, maps. Near fine. Second printing, tight and lovely, of this study first published in 1944. First printed by the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, by the United States Indian Service, as Number 1 in the "Indian Education Research Series." Interesting is that front flyleaf and half-title page each bear ownership inkstamp of noted American anthropologist, Indian studies authority and University of Chicagoprofessor Milton B. Singer (1912-94) -- in pencil, he signs last name to half-title page, underlines and makes a few margin comments here and there throughout the text, and one blank rear inner flyleaf is filled with his comments about the text; laid in is a 5" X 7 3/4" sheet with his list of "Hopi Villages.".

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Clarence Ellsworth (illustrator). University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1947. 151 pages. This title was first published by the Haskell Institute out of Lawrence, Kansas in 1944, for the United States Indian Services. Three years later, in 1947, the material was re-released though the University of Chicago, and not before it. So University of Chicago publications of this title at the earliest are second printings; which this copy is; as the copyright page correctly notates. Book is bright, tight and clean with decorative illustrated boards matching the art work of the incredible DJ. Underneath front flap on front pastedown is a small, neatly stamped previous owner's name. Two small specks on endpapers with old bookseller price written small on rear endpaper. Panels are bright and clean with a touch of shelf-rubbing along cloth on panel edges. Uncommon original DJ with $3.00 price intact on flap. DJ has a handful of small open chips yet remains attractive thanks to the incredible artwork. A nice, tight, attractive copy of a title that brings the peaceful Hopi culture into focus.
