Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. The exquisite objects created by goldsmith and jeweler Peter Carl Faberge and his studio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the aristocracy and nobility of imperial Russia are considered to be some of the most refined examples of the jeweler's art of any age. Of greatest fascination are the extraordinary Easter eggs created as special commissions for the Russian imperial family and other notable patrons - works that remain unparalleled in their ingenuity of construction and sheer beauty.Accompanying a major exhibition 'Faberge Revealed' represents a landmark for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and for Faberge scholarship. The essays by Geza von Habsburg and other scholars present new findings on Faberge, his workshops, and the creation of these extraordinary objects. For the first time all items by or attributed to Faberge in VMFA's collection are documented along with the museum's significant holdings of other Russian decorative arts. Also included is a section on forgeries that bravely confronts this vexing question. Every object has been splendidly re-photographed for this book - and the detailed photography alone should provide inestimable value for future Faberge scholarship.Richly illustrated with some 600 photographs, the volume documents an important collection bequeathed in 1947 to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by Lillian Thomas Pratt, of Fredericksburg, Va., the wife of General Motors executive John Lee Pratt. Her collection, assembled between 1933 and 1946, comprised several hundred creations by the Faberge workshops and by other Russian imperial jewelers. These exquisite, marvelously crafted objects, range from the majestic jeweled imperial eggs to delicate jeweled flowers in vases to diamond-encrusted icons and tiaras, to animal figures nimbly carved from precious stone. W. Ehrstrom ? Master Craftsman, Raimo Fagestrom : From Traditional Goldsmithing to Art Jewellery, Marianne Aav : Jewellery Art ? Late Phenomenon in Finland, Helena ja Lars Pahlman, Collectors of Contemporary Jewellery. The fascinating world of jewellery is presented with both examples from past centuries and the work of designers representing new, industrially made jewellery in Finland. The trailblazing companies of the field, Kalevala Koru, Kaunis Koru and Lapponia Jewelry, and their designers, have contributed in a variety of ways to the Finnish culture of jewellery, which also comprises unique works of art that are successful in international competition. Since 1960s, Finland has jewellery artists and designers that have broken with tradition and worked with different materials and forms in their search for their own approach. There are many jewellery artists, although their works appeal, for the time being to only a small group of experts. An interview with Helena and Lars Pahlman, who began to collect jewellery art or experimental jewellery in the 1970s in Finland, explores their interest in this pastime and illustrates their collection, of which one hundred examples chosen by them are presented. 0 g.

Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2003. Hardcover. Condition: New. No Jacket. TILLANDER-GODENHIELM, Ulla [175] pp. À La Vieille Russie & Alain De Gourcuff Editeur 2000 14 1/4" x 10" Since his passing in 1920, so much attention has been riveted, understandably enough, on the work of Carl Faberge and his workshops, that for anything new of real historical value to be unearthed at this late stage must be regarded as genuinely exciting. This book presents the album of designs by his chief work master from 1903 to 1918, Henrik Wigstrom, with its actual depictions of actual pieces in their actual sizes and actual colors. The 'hand' of Wigstrom may be seen in his watercolors, and in the completed pieces made in his workshop. This album also demonstrates the great precision and care that helped to catapult Faberge from the status of a small firm to that of a giant - of its time, and for all time. This care, precision, and organization were adopted by Faberge long before the term 'quality circles' became synonymous with the transformation of the Japanese economy into a powerhouse of the last quarter of the 20th century. IN her essay on the Wigstrom workshop in this book, Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm discusses this ingenious method of production, and its repercussions on the quality, quantity and variety of Faberge's oeuvre. Faberge had his own style, and even when some of his workmen also worked for others, the pieces they made for Faberge invariably bear his 'stylistic' signature. His work lay in the long tradition of great artist-jewelers such as Cellini, Dinglinger and Nitot. Most people in the field are aware to some extent of his working methods, but this book spells them out in unprecedented detail.

Publisher's pictorial boards. Very fine indeed, practically as new. Helsinki, Finnish Antiquarian Society, 2005. 4to. xxii + 570 pp. Illustrated with some 160 colour and documentary photographs. With extensive notes, index and bibliography. A thorough survey including Imperial gifts of snuff boxes, cigarette cases and watches as well as orders and medals. With chapters on "Gifts with the Sovereign's portrait","Gifts with the Sovereign's Cypher", "Gifts with State Emblems", "The Makers of the Imperial Awards", "Insignia and Medals", etc. A magnificient dissertation by Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm, great-granddaughter of the St. Petersburg goldsmith Alexander Tillander, a leading supplier to the Imperial Russian Court of Nicholas II. - - - "A fine silver or gold pocket watch was a typical gift. When travelling by sea to Finland, the Russian emperors would present watches to the pilot boat captains, and when travelling by train, every station manager along the way would receive one, as would the policemen responsible for the safety of the imperial family." Tillander-Godenhielm is herself a fourth generation member of a goldsmith family with Russian connections. Several Finnish goldsmiths were employed as suppliers by the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty, and Tillander-Godenhielm's grandfather was one of them. While working in the family business, she became interested in Russian gold and silver objects, many of which have remained in Finland, some still in the possession of the original recipient's family. Sometimes orders for multiples of the same gift item were placed. "Archival research has revealed account books showing requests for ten silver cigarette cases decorated with a double-headed eagle of a specific design, or twelve rings set with specific gemstones. This type of gift was destined for lower-ranking servitors. The more valuable gifts intended for higher ranking officials were all unique in design" (Arja-Leena Paavola). - - - (Journal of the Finnish Antiquarian Society, 113.).
