"The best-written superhero in comics is Starman. James Robinson had the marvelous notion to create, in Jack Knight, the son of an agining superhero loath to take over the family bisiness. When the original Starman becomes too old to fight, Jack is pressed into service, and we see the son's emotions shift and waver. Freudian and excitable, Starman is keen." - Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly.

Maps, drawings by A.W. Davey, illustrated endpapers,The front endpaper bears an inscription "To Paul Malles with Kindest Regards [signed] T. C. Douglas Premier of Sask. Nov 25th 1955" during the time Douglas was premier of the province (from 1944 to 1961) Paul Malles info. There was an unexpected demand for French literature, given the abrupt surge in CCF popularity during 1942. To help alleviate that problem, the Québec Provincial council member Paul Malles volunteered to produce a monthly newsletter in both English and French. In 1957, the CLC also announced the appointment of Paul Malles of Montreal as Executive Assistant to C. H. Millard, Organizational Director of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. Mr. Malles is a writer on economic and labour affairs with the CBC International Service and will go to the Brussels headquarters of the ICFTU on leave of absence from the CBC. Later a member of The Economic Council of Canada. From the dust jacket -----This is an authoritative and exciting history of a province from the earliest days to the booming present--a book which captures uniquely the atmosphere and the spirit of Saskatchewan and its people. As we turn the pages we relive the exploits of the great explorers; the rise and decline of the fur empires; the days of the Red River carts when thousands of pioneers struck out bravely to wrest their homes and their livelihood from the prairie; the coming of the railroad, and the rise of the wheat pools. Mostly we read about the people. While based on thorough and painstaking research, this book was not written for the few. In the author's view, the part played by the livery stable, the "party" telephone and the threshing rig are often more significant than the "dry bones" found in many academic works. Of people, he says "Important was the leather aproned blacksmith with his fiery forge and ringing anvil. Rarely without spectators, he fashioned and fitted hot iron-shoes to the smoking hooves of horses excited by the smells and sounds of his shop, tempered the sizzling plowshears, et iron-tires on wagons and buggies, improvised a repair for breaking-plow or binder."The contents include -----1. Rock, Water and Soil2. First Immigrants3. Furs, Forts, and Pemmican4. Survey, Steel, and Settlers5. Grievances, Guns, and Gallows6. Broadening the Base7. Turning the Sod8. Patriotism and Production9. Progressives, Politics, and Pools10. Depression, Dust, and Defiance11. Men and Machines12. EpilogueTommy Douglas made an invaluable contribution to political life," says Xavier Gélinas, Curator of Canadian Political History at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. "In total, he provided the impetus for about a hundred pieces of legislation, several of which can be said to have shaped the Canadian identity." In recognition of this immense contribution, in 1980 he was named a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Maps, drawings by A.W. Davey, illustrated endpapers,The front blank bears an warm and heart felt inscription to close friend " To Dr. "Sandy" Robertson Saskatchewan's most recent acquisition in the field of Social Medicine from [signed] T. C. Douglas Premier of Sask. Sept 24th 1958" Alexander "Sandy" Duff Robertson was born on April 28,1926, in Dunkfield, England. He received an M.B. from the University of Edinburgh in 1949, a D.P.H. from the University of London in 1955, and an M.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961. In 1958, Robertson became head of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan becoming one of the early supporters of Douglas and importantly Medicare [Social Medicine] as acknowledged by Douglas's inscription. Superb provenance making this a historically important book. Robertson later accepted the executive directorship of the Milbank Memorial Fund in New York City in 1962.Signed inscription by former Saskatchewan premier, father of Canadian medicare system, and "greatest Canadian," Tommy Douglas dated Sept 24th 1958, during the time Douglas was premier of the province (from 1944 to 1961) In November 2004 a nation wide vote by over one million Canadians selected Tommy Douglas as "The Greatest Canadian of all Time."Known as the 'Father of Medicare' - he launched medicare in Saskatchewan when he was premier of that province, first universal hospital insurance in 1947, then medicare in 1959. He has been described as, "the most influential politician never to be elected Prime Minister." Tommy Douglas was a great Canadian he had many roles: a minister, a family man, a persuasive public speaker, a comedian, an advocate for the poor, unemployed and farmers. But those roles just combine into one title to most Canadians: a great politician who cared about people. He was not in politics for prestige or the money of political life, he was there because he wanted to make life better for all Canadians. Always able to adapt and change his approach if one method did not work. For Tommy Douglas democratic socialism was really his only political choice because it was the only philosophy that valued all people as much as he did." quoted from Wayne Fisher on-line article Tommy Douglas Making Canada Better!Tommy Douglas made an invaluable contribution to political life," says Xavier Gélinas, Curator of Canadian Political History at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. "In total, he provided the impetus for about a hundred pieces of legislation, several of which can be said to have shaped the Canadian identity."In recognition of this immense contribution, in 1980 he was named a Companion of the Order of Canada.
