Hardcover. Condition: New. Limited Edition of 2000. New, in publisher's shrink wrap. AVAILABLE NOW. The Original Edition by graphic design publisher Unit Editions. -- This book is a near facsimile of the one-off, leather-bound 'sketchbook' (shown left) that Lance Wyman made to catalogue his design process for the creation of a logo and graphic identity for the 1976 USA Bicentennial celebrations to mark the creation of the USA as an independent republic. It's a record of the creative process that Wyman went through to arrive at a refined and workable solution. It's rare for designers to reveal so much of their inner workings, and even rarer for it to be documented with this degree of thoroughness. But Lance Wyman is no ordinary designer. The work was done in Mexico in 1970 - Wyman had gone there to design the graphics for the Mexico 68 Olympics. But in 1971 he returned to the USA, and to a design scene that was markedly different from the one he had left. For a start, he had acquired a stellar reputation. One year after Wyman's return to New York, Richard M Nixon, the 37th president of the USA, instigated Federal Design Improvement Program, a far ranging initiative aimed at producing better design for government funded projects. Wyman was to work on numerous projects that came from this, some of them amongst the most celebrated of his career: National Zoo (1975), Washington Mall (1975), Minnesota Zoo (1979). But before working on any of these large-scale civic projects, he took part in a competition to design the graphics for the Bicentennial celebrations. As can be seen in the pages of this book, Wyman approached the task with his customary mix of graphic rigor and visual ingenuity. In an opening interview with Adrian Shaunghnessy, Wyman explains the genesis of the project, the reasons why it was never implemented and discusses the importance of process in any designer's work. 'There is a role for this book to show process, to show how a concept is the first step, and how an idea is refined over time. It's a process. It's not instant.' Lance Wyman.

The Original Edition by graphic design publisher Unit Editions. -- In this book you will find the covers of design magazines, journals and periodicals of all kinds. They cover many topics - graphic design, typography, architecture, interiors, print, theory and history. But above all, they are brilliant specimens of innovative visual design. There's no better place to view the stylistic rollercoaster of graphic design than the covers of design magazines - it's a fast-track education in the history of design and typography. As Steven Heller notes: "As we head deeper into the age of hand-held devices, covers will become obsolete. So, it is for this reason that preserving and archiving these documents of international design, one cover at a time, is beyond useful." The Designers The covers found in Impact 2.0 are designed and art directed by a galaxy of international designers, including: 8vo, APFEL, Neville Brody, Seymour Chwast, The Designers Republic, Simon Esterson, Experimental Jetset, Armin Hofmann, Max Kisman, Zuzana Licko, Domenic Lippa, Herb Lubalin, Karel Martens, Na Kim, Non-Format, Rudy VanderLans, Wolfgang Weingart, Matt Willey and many, many others. Paperback. Condition: NEW. Limited Edition of 2000. New, in publisher's shrink wrap. AVAILABLE NOW. The Original Edition by graphic design publisher Unit Editions. Another gorgeous title from Unit Editions, Action Time Vision is a collection of DIY graphics from the punk and post-punk eras. Brook and Shaughnessy are masters at digging through graphic design archives to pull out some of the most inspired, often underrepresented work from previous decades, and they don't disappoint here. Fast Co Design Rather than referencing the Sex Pistols or The Clash, Action Time Vision credits the designs of Wire, Bauhaus and Penetration sleeves, the ones with a 'disquieting look about them.' This curation of sleeves allows a representation of the extensive language of punk, while cleverly concentrating on its graphic design influence. Lucy Bourton, It's Nice That Music from the punk era transformed the world of music. If you could play three chords, you could make records. You didn't even need a record label. You could start your own. The same thing happened in graphic design. All you needed were a few a sheets of Letraset and access to a photocopier, and you could make your own record covers. And lots of people did just that. Action Time Vision: Punk & Post-Punk 7" Record Sleeves [Unit 26] is a celebration of DIY graphics from the punk and post-punk eras. You might call it outsider graphic design. With a few exceptions, trained designers rarely did 7" singles covers for this notoriously shouty and aggressive music. Apart from a few covers done by Barney Bubbles and Peter Saville, most punk and post-punk covers were designed by band members, label owners or friends. Few of the sleeves showcased here are beautiful in the normal sense of the word. But they all have an urgency and an exhilarating disregard for design conventions that makes them exceptional. They are all clarion calls for independence and freedom from pop industry norms. The work in this book is culled from the record collections of designer (and Unit Editions co-founder) Tony Brook, and leading punk scholar Russ Bestley. As one of the world's leading authorities on punk and post-punk music, Russ has contributed an insightful essay to the book. The book also features interviews with designer Malcolm Garrett, Mute founder Daniel Miller and Sniffin' Glue editor and musician Mark Perry.

Published to celebrate the major retrospective at the Design Museum in London, this book presents the work of a graphic titan. A pioneer of the new modernity, Wim Crouwel in his early work anticipated the current computer era, and caught the sprit of early space age futurism. His programmatic approach to graphic design, his innovative use of grid systems, and his hunger for typographic experimentation, is as relevant today as it was when he first began working as a graphic designer in the 1950s.

Binding is firm and sound. Pages are clean and bright. A very presentable copy of this uncommon monograph devoted to the typography of American graphic designer Herbert F. "Herb" Lubalin (1918-1981). ABOUT THIS BOOK: Herb Lubalin claimed not to be a great typographer. âIn fact,' he said, âI'm terrible, because I don't follow the rules.' This new book proves the opposite. On every page it features Lubalin's typographic genius (logos, layouts, lettering and typefaces), and places him at the forefront of 20th century typographic innovation. He even had names for what he did: he described it as âgraphic expressionism' or âconceptual typography'. Using his ability to adapt, merge and create new typographic forms, he was able to enhance and amplify meaning in ways that hadn't been seen before. This book is the third title about Lubalin's work published by Unit Editions; this volume focuses solely on Lubalin's typography. It comes with new texts and new photography, and is accompanied by previously unpublished material.
