First Edition
Condition: Good. The format is approximately 8 inches by 11 inches. Page 31 has been removed from a 1997 issue of Yankees Magazine [date determined from other side of the sheet]. Leo Trachtenberg was the author of The Wonder Team, which describes in detail the year 1927, when the New York Yankees became the Wonder Teamâ"probably baseball's best team ever. That club included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Waite Hoyt, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Herb Pennock, Bob Meusel, and Wilcy Moore. Also part of the narrative are recollections by owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert, manager Miller Huggins, business manager Ed Barrow, and scout Paul Krichell. No participant of that great team is omitted. In detailing the events leading to the 1927 World Series, Leo Trachtenberg weaves players' profiles and histories along with those of the Yankee owner, management, coaches, scouts, trainer, and batboy/mascot. Also included are 1927 statistics and photos from Yankee archives. This article in the Yankees Magazine relates to his research. This single sheet is not the complete article, but does have on this one side a photograph of the entire team (30 folks, presumably including coaches and the manager) and a box with the Team Roster with 24 names. Kentucky Fried Chicken advertisement on the other side. The 1927 New York Yankees season was the 25th season of the New York Yankees of the American League. The team finished with a record of 110-44-1, winning their fifth pennant and finishing 19 games ahead of the Philadelphia Athletics and were tied for first or better for the whole season. New York was managed by Miller Huggins, and played at Yankee Stadium. They won the 1927 World Series, sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates. This Yankees team was known for its feared lineup, which was nicknamed "Murderers' Row", and is widely considered to be the greatest baseball team in MLB history. The roster included nine future Hall of Famers: Pitchers Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt, Infielders Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri, outfielders Babe Ruth and Earle Combs, Manager Miller Huggins, Team President Ed Barrow and Owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert. Single sheet, printed on both sides--Suitable for framing Presumed extracted from the First Edition, First printing.
