Turki, Fawaz. The Disinherited, Journal of a Palestinian Exile. New York: Monthly Review Press, 1972. Signed and inscribed by the author to Jewish American journalist Isidor Feinstein Stone. First edition, second printing. 156 pages. Yellow cloth binding with black lettering on spine. In original dustjacket with cover showing nine black and white images of Palestinian refugees. 8vo. Inscription reads "To I. F. Stone with fraternal greetings from a Palestinian brother. Fawaz Turki - Cambridge, Sussex, 1973, c/- I.A.V. 40, Rue de Berri, Paris 81, France. Tel:525-38-35." Author and journalist Fawaz Turki was born in Haifa in 1940 and found himself a refugee at the age of eight, during Israel's 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine known as the Nabka. His memoir The Disinherited, written at age 32, documents Turki's childhood in Haifa and Beirut, education in England, and experiences living and traveling in Australia, India, and France. Fawaz writes candidly about his anger with Israel and England and grapples with feelings of shame in his Arab identity. Excerpt on back cover reads "I returned from my retreat in the east and went up on the rooftops to shout to the world that I was a Palestinian. I was no longer alone, hiding, shamefaced, embittered. I belonged to a people who shared their travails and their accomplishments with a commonwealth of men and women across the world who like them struggled to remove the leaf covering the nakedness of imperialist oppression." Turki's complex and nuanced writing on Palestine has provided important insights into the ongoing Palestinian genocide, which has sparked worldwide outrage and protest. Memoir documenting the Palestinian expulsion and diaspora from 1948-1972. Very good condition.
