Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Teeming with convulsive energy, raw brush strokes and Fauvist colours, the paintings of Robert Qualters reflect the multifaceted and kinetic spirit of the artist himself. In these pages, the art historian Vicky A. Clark presents the first in-depth study of the art and life of this iconic Pittsburgh artist. Complemented by over eighty colour images, Clark follows Qualterss development from early childhood sketches through his recent autobiographical work. As she reveals, Qualters is truly a quotidian raconteur, who infuses allegory, narrative and memory into his paintings of urban landscapes, neighbourhoods, lunch counters and amusement parks. Here, we witness coming of age and sexuality, economic hardship, working-class identities, death and rebirth, and many other themes, both personal and universal. As Clark shows, Qualterss oeuvre is the culmination of a lifelong artistic journey, recalling a host of influences from Japanese prints to Matisse, Bruegel and Rembrandt. Throughout his career, and despite the popularity of his contemporaries, many of whom adopted abstract painting, Qualters has maintained a distinctly representational style, keeping a close link to his audience through the power of visual storytelling. Vicky A. Clark presents a comprehensive study of the work of iconic Pittsburgh artist Robert Qualters. Complimented by over eighty color images, Clark shows Qualters to be a remarkable visual storyteller, who infuses allegory, narrative, and memory into his kinetic images filled with bold brush strokes and fauvist colors. Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
Pamphlet. [32] pages, illustrations, wraps. 15 x 11 in. Corners of spine bumped including significant creasing at head of spine. Fore-edge corners starting to curl; covers scuffed and lightly soiled. Scarce catalog for an exhibition at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, running from September 15 to November 19, 2001. Conceptual art works all dealing with facts and truth; Victor Grauer, Pablo Helguera, Ayanah Moor, Virginia Moore, and Diane Samuals are among the participants. Includes an essay by curator Vicky Clark that uses the O.J. Simpson case to explore the "drama of false facts and untrue truths which played to a rapt national audience." A second essay by David C. Madden. Random facts are interspersed. Two inserts: one is a photocopied flier for the show with a plan of the exhibition space; the second addresses the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Grauer's video installation included found footage of a plane crash. The show expanded to include a "community art project" that invited contributions from show attendees. No copies in WorldCat as of March 2023.

Illustrated throughout with drawings, photographs, programs, comic book covers and drawings, movie posters and promotional materials, memorabilia, behind the scenes photos, and more. Comic-Con began in 1970 in San Diego and continues as a very special place for artists, fans, writers, celebrities, and other professionals to gather in celebration of all things wonderful in the world of comics, science fiction and fantasy, film, videos, anime, and fun. From Ray BradburyÕs foreword: ÒWhen I was in my late forties, I was asked to come down to San Diego to attend the first Comic-Con at the El Cortez Hotel. I was part of a group of about three hundred people, if you can believe that. The fascinating thing about this was that these people all loved illustration. We were all very happy being there and enjoying one anotherÕs company.Ó Accompanying Bradbury (who is featured extensively throughout the book) at that first gathering were such luminaries as A.E. van Vogt, Jack Kirby, and Forrest J Ackerman.
