Il se lie rapidement avec des jeunes gens férus de littérature et publie divers essais dans des revues, insérant ses poésie dans Les Plaisirs et les Jours. Il entame un roman autobiographique, Jean Santeuil, et traduit les oeuvres de John Ruskin. Adoptant la vision de l'univers esthétique anglais, Proust s'est efforcé d'échapper à la loi du temps pour tenter, par l'art, de saisir l'essence d'une réalité enfouie dans l'inconscient et « recréée par notre pensée ».Jalousie est un texte d'une densité égale à sa crudité. Mais c'est d'abord une curiosité dans l'ordre de l'édition proustienne. En effet, cette centaine de pages inédites de Sodome et Gomorrhe paraissent, en novembre 1921, chez Arthème Fayard et Cie, dans Les OEuvres Libres, « recueil littéraire mensuel ne publiant que l'inédit ». Le texte de Proust ouvrant la revue côtoie ceux d'auteurs en vogue : les Miguel Zamacoïs, Victor Margueritte, Alfred Machard, André Billy. Disproportion flagrante ! 1921 : c'est le temps de la reconnaissance et presque de la mort. Et l'on voit Proust, après la publication de Jalousie, assailli de demandes de collaboration à des revues à la mode, comme Les Cahiers Verts (dirigés par Daniel Halévy, chez Grasset), offres qu'il décline, par fatigue et malice. Ambiguïté du succès : Jalousie est à la fois, et sous la même plume, louangé et condamné par pudibonderie, dans le très parisien Comoedia ! Le roman Jalousie se joue en deux actes : l'un théâtral et aristocratique ; l'autre intime et bourgeois : deux actes et un épilogue paradoxal, puisque celui-ci nous ramène en arrière, dans le ressouvenir de Balbec. Le premier acte, le plus long, raconte la réception chez la Princesse de Guermantes, et promène, dans la pupille du Narrateur, les cruautés et les trahisons du « grand monde », les manoeuvres séductrices de Charlus, aussi l'agonie de Swann, changé en vieux prophète dreyfusard. Le second dit la visite tardive qu'Albertine fait au Narrateur, ravivant tous les poisons du coeur. La jalousie qui insuffle l'amour. Les mensonges qui le font flamber.
