Issue number AMP 194641. 8vo. 22.8cm, 90p., printed wraps, price stamp on the cover, slightly dust worn, very good author's signed presentation copy. (Qc). (miniature score, for orchestra, duration 18 min.). Presentation copy, to a well-known member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, signed by Villa-Lobos on the second sheet. Heitor Villa-Lobos was a much admired Brazilian composer who gained respect not only from his compatriots but also from musicians, artists and writers world-wide. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and studied the cello with his father, who was a librarian. He became fascinated with local musical heritage, and made two trips, in 1905 to the north-eastern Brazilian states, and in 1912 to the Amazonian interior, in search of native folk songs. This music proved to be inspirational in his future works, which received much acclaim for their originality. Villa-Lobas was offered a government grant to study music in Paris from 1923-1930, and on his return was named director of music education in Rio de Janeiro. He devised a method of teaching choral music to school children, incorporating the folk songs he had collected in his travels. The Uirapuru is an Amazonian bird, as well as a mythological creature. The bird sings only once a year, for a few minutes in the morning while building its nest,"the sound is melodic and beautiful. There is a belief that a human being is transformed after death into an uirapuru, whose song breathes life into the quiet of the forest. Villa-Lobos' Uirapuru was first presented as a ballet in Buenos Aries on May 25th, 1935.

Condition: Fine. - A dynamic 11 inch high by 14 inch wide black & white matte finish photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the great Brazilian classical composer Villa-Lobos standing at a podium under the walls of a white tent. Attired in white shirt and tie, Villa-Lobos' baton is a blur as fiercely looks left towards the unseen orchestra, his empty fist emphasizing the point. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara, with his name & address stamped on the verso. The photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso, and also dated and identified in pencil. Fine. Emmerich Gara (b.1901, d.1963). Born in Vienna, Austria in 1901, Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States, where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra (later called The Symphony of the Air) until his death. From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance, rehearsal, and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing. Gara's action portraits were used for record covers, for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time, Life and other major magazines around the world.
