Edizione corretta testualmente e la più affidabile impressa sino ad allora della Cronaca di Giovanni Villani e di quella che Matteo Villani compose in continuazione a quella del più celebre fratello (essa era stata interrotta dalla morte di Giovanni, morto nella peste nera del 1348). Matteo proseguì il racconto del fratello sino al 1363, anno in cui perì a sua volta in una nuova epidemia di peste. Con indici, appendici di documenti inediti e una vita del Villani composta da Pietro Massai. Bella e pregevolissima edizione, da lungo tempo desiderata, e che vince in pregio tutte le antecedenti. Torrentino stampò soltanto la seconda parte delle cronache di Giovanni e la prima della contiuazione del fratello Matteo; la prima edizione completa delle loro storie, con una breve aggiunta di Filippo, figlio di Matteo, uscì per i Giunti nel 1596 (Moreni, Bibliografia storico-ragionata della Toscana, p. 462). La Seconda parte della Cronica di Giovanni consta dei libri undicesimo e dodicesimo, e copre gli anni dal 1333 alla morte dell'autore, nel 1348; questa Prima parte di quella di Matteo va dal 1348 al 1354, e consta di quattro libri in ottantotto capitoli. Primo volume: al frontespizio antica firma d'appartenenza cassata; bellissima copia, assai fresca e abbastanza marginosa, su carta forte. Collazionato [a, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y, Z: tutti quaderni], completo. Secondo volume: leggeri aloncini ai margini dell pp. 19-32 e 385-389; margini delle pp. da 383 alla fine leggermente gualciti; mancanza anticamente reintegrata all'angolo sup. esterno dell'ultima carta, con piccola perdita di testo; a p. 230 manicula e nota a segnalare un capitoletto su Barga; alla fine del colophon antica scritta 'ad usum Petri de Tonellis'; copia leggermente meno fresca nel complesso, ma comunque buona. Collazionato [§, §§, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y, Z, Aa, Bb: tutti quaderni], mancano le ultime due carte, bianche. Dedicatoria del secondo volume, indici e titoli dei capitoli in corsivo; testo in tondo, molto chiaro e perfettamente leggibile, come chiara e comprensibile è la lingua usata. Nell'Enciclopedia machiavelliana (Treccani) si legge: 'La peculiare attenzione di Giovanni Villani (1280 - 1348) agli aspetti economico-finanziari, statistico-demografici e amministrativi di Firenze (memorabili in particolare i capitoli xci-xciv del libro XII) conferisce alla Cronica con le dovute cautele un non trascurabile ruolo anche documentario.(.) La scrittura dell opera in «piano volgare» intende arrecare «frutto» e «diletto» al pubblico dei non letterati, sia mediante il fare «memoria» delle cose notevoli di Firenze, di cui si esalta la nobiltà e la grandezza a partire dalle origini, sia tramite il dare «esemplo»: in chiave etico-morale e politico-civile, centrando la riflessione sul tema delle «mutazioni averse e filici». (.) Sulla strada da lui indicata si pose subito il fratello Matteo (1285?-1363), la cui Cronica, pur non priva di un autonoma diffusione, fu recepita, e poi utilizzata, come una continuazione di quella di Giovanni. Di intenti e prospettive in larga misura diverse, in cui prevalgono il tema della «novità» e un fine moralistico sostenuto da una visione cupa e sfiduciata, l opera di Matteo è composta da undici libri, nei quali sono distesamente narrati gli avvenimenti dal 1348 al 1363. Il racconto relativo alla guerra dei fiorentini contro i pisani, rimasto interrotto a causa della morte dell autore, fu concluso dal figlio Filippo (1325-1405), fino alla pace stipulata nel 1364.'.

Opera questa rarissima, magistralmente impressa dal Torrentino in minuto carattere tondo. La Cronica di G. Villani (1276-1348) narra, in 12 libri, la storia di Firenze dalle origini fantastiche e immaginose fino al 1346; alla sua morte, il fratello Matteo (1295-1363) vi aggiunse altri 11 libri, giungendo sino al 1363, e commissionando poi al figlio Filippo di portare a compimento il racconto della guerra di Pisa. L'opera di Giovanni Villani, soprattutto, è considerata, per la vastità del disegno e l'ampiezza degli orizzonti politici, di gran lunga, la maggiore cronaca italiana del Trecento.
