Published by C.B. Waite, Photographer, 1 St. San Cosme 8 1/2; [Winfield] Scott, ca. 1899-1905]., Mexico City, Gunajuato, Mexico:, 1899
Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
Fourteen original unmounted boudoir albumen photographs, sized from 7.5 x 4.5 in. up to 8 x 5.25 in., nearly all w/ captions w/in negative at lower fore-edge, the Waite photos all w/ photographer's imprint stamped on versos (typically covered when purchased mounted at extra cost originally), nearly all w/ neat manuscript ownership notation of "Mrs. Henderson" (minor curling to fore-edges, a couple w/ minor chipping & wear at corners, 1 slightly over-exposed), still a VG set of nice crisp images. These excellent original albumen photos reveal a Mexico in transition before the Mexican Revolution, capturing workers, domesticity, and extreme income gaps between classes in Mexico City, the surrounding countryside and Guanajuato. These include: image No. 1730, Brasero in Mexico Kitchen depicts a massive stove with five different ports for stoking with wood, pots & pans hanging above, and alongside the wall; No. 1642, Making tortillas in Mexico capturing a young woman rolling out her tortillas on stone, with griddle next to her, and wooden and stone mixing bowls before her; 1673 Mexican girls making drawnwork, or young girls seated at looms weaving & creating lace textiles; and 1622, Street Market in City of Mexico, with tents and awnings spread across the courtyard in front of the cathedral with restaurant signs and railroad station signs visible. Others capture more rural scenes such as No. 1653 of the Milk Vendor on a burro; No. 1683 of two burros laden with straw and drover standing next to them, along with Scott's No. 286 of an irrigation water wheel and burro attached to drive the motion. Three others depict the opulent courtyard, splendid furnishings, and striking breezeway and conservatory of a very wealthy Mexican house. The Scott photos of Guanajuato capture a street scene (no. 994) with burro rider, children, and woman carrying jug atop her head along the winding street, with electrical light suspended above, and advertising broadsides plastered to the surrounding walls; while (No. 18) depicts the reservoir above Guanajuato with ornate tower, as well as stately home atop the hill. Waite (1861-1929) was a California photographer who began with a studio on Catalina, before moving to Arizona, and El Paso, TX, before operating in Mexico 1896-1913. Scott (1863-1942) was a fellow California photographer forced to leave San Francisco due to an obscenity trial in 1894-95, and worked on commissions for the Mexican Central Railway and later Ferrocarriles Nacionales. He became well known for his shots of everyday life, and a few years before the Mexican Revolution began collaborating with Waite. Later running a hotel, he would serve as the basis for D.H. Lawrence's character "Bell" in his novel "The Plumed Serpent." Nearly all of the Waite photos present here appear in the "Diario Official, Ciudadano Secretario de Justicia & Instruccion Publica" listings for March, 1905 logging the assorted series by the photographer.
