Very Good++ The American, George Wald, who in 1932 came to Zurch to work with Karrer, was the first to isolate vitamin A from the eye, actually from ox retina (Nature 132, 316 (1933)). This was the starting point of Wald's brilliant research on the chemistry of eye pigments which included the isomerization of vitamin A aldehyde (retinal) 77 by a specific isomerase in the retina to give 11-cis-retinal 78.
