First Edition
Leather with .22 gold-stamping. Condition: Near Fine. Rockwell Kent (illustrator). First Easton Press Collector's Edition. Transcendentalism and Realism. Whitman is often called "the father of free verse." During the Civil War, he worked as a nurse caring for wounded soldiers, and was a passionate supporter of Abraham Lincoln. Whitman's expansive poetry became very controversial, particularly Leaves of Grass, which was sometimes attacked for its explicit sexuality. Tight, bright, clean illustrated edition of Whitman's poetry classic produced with sumptuous tooled leather. No marks or blemishes. Quarto (9 1/4" x 6 1/4"), genuine full green leather with four raised hubs and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine and covers; Illustrated with color frontispiece of Walt Whitman by Robert Shore, plus 7 B&W plates by Rockwell Kent; olive silk page-marker & silk moiré endpapers, 527 pages. Weight: 2 lb. 5.9 oz.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Rockwell Kent (illustrator). Reprint. New York: Heritage Press, 1950. George Macy founded Heritage Press to produce lower-cost versions of the works he printed at his Limited Editions Club; in themselves they are beautiful works. Green linen cloth binding, with Kent's decorative of "WW" suggesting leaves in the wind in gilt. Clean text; 527 pages, with index of first lines. This reproduces the text from the 1855 edition, including the Preface. There is no publication date. Macy previously had published LEC editions in 1929 and 1942 (with different illustrators); this one is often identified as from 1936, but to Quercus it feels like a later reprint, and has seen 1950 suggested. This seems to be an artful compromise, and we will accept that for now. Laid-in is a copy of "The Sandglass" was included for the club members. This volume has a hint of darkening on the spine, else a Fine copy. The slipcase has seen the sun, and now is a light green color. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Reprint. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. Illus. by Rockwell Kent.
