Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 405pp. First published in 1919 under the title "Christian Wahnschaffe"; First published in One-Volume edition, 1930; this copy, Stated: "Fifth Printing, December, 1935". Two Volumes in One: Volume One, "Eva", pp.1-383; Vol. II, "Ruth", pp. 1-405. Shiny brick-red linen boards with crisp black lettering on spine; deckled fore-edge; offsetting on inside covers; uniform light toning to pages; medium toning to text-block edges; closed 1/4" tear, through all pages at once, near midpoint right edge, pp. 171-186 (Nugatory, with NO impact on text itself); lower corners slightly bumped and curled inward; top corners sharp (NOT bumped or curled); hint of wear at top spine corners, else none. Yellow dustwrapper not price-clipped (no price) with front cover and spine lettering in blue, title across top half front cover, author name lettering across bottom front cover; Spine browned, but dark blue lettering still eminently readable; small missing pieces at spine and cover corners with thin piece missing across top spine; wear down spine edges and cover edges (slightly soiled); 1 3/4" partial, circular coffee cup stain on rear dw cover (can barely be seen on shimmering of brick-red linen boards beneath); some general soiling down 1 1/4" horizontal closed tear from gutter toward right top front cover, but long ago backed with archival tape (all flaws are now backed with archival tape): NOW in Brodart mylar which graciously forgives these sins and affords the book (dustwrapper did its job in protecting the book itself) a certain charm, befitting a book 85 years-old: The way to read a classic Novel. Binding still tight (NO cracks); NO previous owner names. Clean text.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Thus. First thus - this is the first one volume edition - 'two volumes in one' as stated on the printer's page, in the authorized English translation, published in 1929. The book was first published in the UK in two volumes by Hodder & Stoughton in 1921, and in the US by Harcourt Brace in 1920. Originally, the book came out in German as "Christian Wahnschaffe" in 1919. ***Very good in oatmeal textured cloth-covered boards with red titles to the spine and front board. The boards are generally clean, just slightly marked through age and hndling over the last 90+ years. No bumps to the boards. Corners sharp. Page block edges slightly marked and darkened. No tears to the cloth. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions and no foxing to the pages. Pages clean. There is some splitting to the paper at the gutter opposite the title page, but this is still holding (the binding is quite susceptible to splitting as the paper stock is quite heavy). No dustwrapper. ***193mm x135mm. 405 pages. ***'Jakob Wassermann (10 Mar 1873 - 1 Jan 1934) was a German writer and novelist. Wassermann's work includes poetry, essays, novels, and short stories. His most important works are considered the novel "The Maurizius Case" (Der Fall Maurizius, 1928) and the autobiography, "My Life as German and Jew" (Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude, 1921), in which he discussed the tense relationship between his German and Jewish identities.' (Wiki) ***A the first one volume edition of the authorized English translation, published in 1929, in very good condition for its age. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
