First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. "War of the Worlds" illustrated in B&W on glossy stock by Warwick Goble (illustrator). 1st Edition. Large octavo, and a heavy volume. Bound volume of the American magazine; issues bound without their separate original covers and advertising matter, as usual. Half-bound in cordovan leather with gilt titles and blind-stamped ornamentation to spine by Ward Brothers binders, Jacksonville, Ill. We grade this copy "very-good-minus" due to some small patches of erosion (gouges? Experimental bug chews?) to the black pebbled cloth covering the boards. Contains most (but not all) of H.G. Wells' pioneering science fiction novel "The War of the Worlds," which was serialized in this American magazine (simultaneous with its serialization in Pearsons magazine in the U.K.) from April through December, 1897. (Curiously, while other bound volumes of Cosmopolitan labeled "Vol. 23" contain issues of July through December 1897 -- offering "War of the Worlds" Chapters 12 through 22 and thus including the final chapter -- this volume instead contains issues of May to October, 1897, and therefore, while containing six out of nine installments of the serialized novel, contains neither the beginning nor the end.) These magazine serializations mark the first appearance of the epochal novel in print. Said chapters illustrated (famously) by Warwick Goble. This volume also includes "The Klondyke Gold Region / Account of a Six Months' Trip Through the Yukon Gold Fields," by Robert Oglesby; a feature by Lewis McLouth with photos of the "Cyclone" and other special plow trains clearing enormous snow drifts; a "Secret History of the Garfield-Conkling Tragedy" by T.B. Connery; the illustrated poem "Hasta Manana" by Bret Harte, a photo essay on "Japan's Stage and Greatest Actor" (Danjuro) by Robert P. Porter, etc. 700 pp., reduced from $230.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Profusely illustrated throughout in line and greyscale with colour illustrations to rear. Illustrations by Warwick Goble, Paul Hardy, Marcus Tindal, Henry Austin and others. (illustrator). 1st Edition. Another Scarce, near-Fine copy of this famous transatlantic magazine in its original coloured, art nouveau beveled boards and attractive gilt blocking to spine and upper board. Minor crumpling to top and tail of spine and a little spotting to top page edges but otherwise a very clean, bright and strong square binding, in itself unusual for such a thick (752 page) volume. Clean plain end-papers with normal off-setting and importantly, with no inscription. Appears unmarked throughout with no marking and no browning or tinting on the coated paper (even toning to few uncoated preliminary pages). Superb mixed-media illustrations ranging from line drawings through photographic and collotype to a polychrome and colour section towards the rear. The truly dramatic original illustrations by Goble accompany the second half of the first appearance in print of Wells' famous story; Paul Hardy's artwork similarly illustrates Kipling's first print appearance of his complete story and Conan Doyle's first printing of the last of his Tales of the High Seas: Tomb of his Ancestors. There are also fiction pieces by Guy Boothby, Cutcliffe Hyne (Captain Kettle stories), Joan Barrett, "The Four Presidents", "The White Cockade" and a colour illustrated song by Lewis Morris (see also The Epic of Hades by Morris also available from this seller). Plus all the usual wide range of interesting topics: Stories from the Red Cross, alligator hunting, Blackfeet Indians, London executions, a dynamite factory, all about arsenic, New York millionaires, Californian economic boom, tobogganing etc, etc. Altogether an impressive and attractive volume both in appearance and content, very much of its age. Other similar volumes for sale by this seller.
