First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. First Edition. One of the earliest books on the White Mountains (preceded only by Crawford's and Spaulding's works). Contains a number of plates depicting scenes in the mountains, narrative of White Mountain history, the author's account of his family's destruction in a mountain landslide, discussions of Indians, geology, tables of distances and transportation from Boston and New York, etc. The appendix by Nathaniel Noyes contains a "Guide from New York and Boston to the Whit Mountains and covers pages 308 to 321 and is followed by four pages of publisher's ads (one leaf containing ads is torn away at the top not affecting any text). The ads indicate that this is probably the 3rd thousand. There is no map in this copy, but it appears that copies with Noyes' Guide in the Appendix were not published with the map that appeared in copies without an appendix. Contains 8 full page plates including the frontis. Uncommon. Some rubbing to original brown cloth blindstamped covers, general foxing to most pages, lacks the front free end paper. Ref: Not in Howes, Sabin; B&W Illustrations; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 307 pages.
