Hardcover. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. No Jacket. The Karluk was the leading ship of Stefansson's 1913-1918 Arctic Expedition, and it was lost almost before the expedition had properly begun. Trapped in the Arctic ice, it drifted away on an ice floe while Stefansson was off on a caribou hunt; and while the leader continued with his explorations in the north, not returning for 5 years, the Karluk drifted for months in the ice pack before being crushed and sinking. Her entire complement of 25, made up of crew, scientists, and Eskimos (including a woman and 2 children) escaped on to the ice, thanks to the leadership of the ship's commander, Captain Robert Bartlett, who thereupon set off, with one Eskimo and dog-sled, on a hazardous 700-mile journey across the ice to Siberia for help. He reached the destination safely, but it was 6 months before rescue finally arrived, and by that time 11 men were dead. Eight died trying to reach the land across the heaving ice floes. One man shot himself. Two died of malnutrition and disease on ice-covered Wrangel Island, where the rest barely managed to survive until rescue came. Stefansson was able to give only a second-hand report of the fate of the Karluk and her survivors as an Appendix to his account of the expedition. But no one on the Karluk who escaped on to the ice and survived the awful privation of Wrangel Island has told the whole story of what happened during the first tragic year of the Stefansson expedition.until now. Previous owner's name appears on the first page. Fading to boards. Bumps on corner boards. Pp 170, pages clean with no markings or highlighting. Glossy black and white pictures. Includes Acknowledgments and Index.
