He got in trouble with his British employers because he was a compassiionate man who did his best to help sick, hungry and broke American pioneers freshly arrived over the Oregon Trail. But he insisted that Ameircans settle south ot the Collumbia River as he believed when the International boundary was setled the Columbia River wouls be the dividing line. To protect the interests of the Hudson' Bay Company, McLoughlin put up the first building at Willamette Falls (Oregon City) then plattted the city. On his retirement he moved permanently to Oregon City and became an American citizen.
