The short stories in Everyday Wonder are reflections on every day moments in the midst of ordinary life that reveal the sacred. The holy engulfs us all the time through we tend not to recognize it. The two of us reflected on things we could not name; times when life turned us up and down. We pondered phrases like "a god thing happened," or "I was on holy ground." Sometimes we called each other just to say, "Something strange just happened." As we reached our fifth decade of friendship, we looked at events that have transformed us. Sharing stories about everyday events has been a mode of building relationships since humans first gathered around the village fire. We have looked at events that have transformed our understanding of who we are and what our lives are about, and decided to share some of these stories. A clean very presentable copy. 11.25" x 7" (sheet size). A lovely pencil study of flowers by Mary P. W. Smith, dated on the lower right "Drawn Jan 1870. Painted Feb. 1871." Unsigned, but guaranteed to be her work. The painting, "Pink Flowers," is recorded in Robert Wilson Torchia's The Smiths: A Family of Philadelphia Artists, p. 39, #89. Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith (1819-1874), wife the famed landscape painter Russell Smith, was a talented artist in her own right. Possessed of a deft hand and a keen eye for her subject, her lovely floral paintings and sensitive drawings have long been appreciated. She also provided at-home art instruction for her son, Xanthus, the esteemed nautical and Civil War painter, and her daughter, Mary, a fine painter of small barnyard animals. All of the Smith family members exhibited their works at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. This drawing is from a small archive of Smith family drawings, watercolors, and oil sketches in our inventory. The collection was acquired from a Smith descendant in Maine and includes works by Russell Smith, his wife, Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith, and their children Xanthus and Mary.
