Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos (illustrator). 1st. 28 (Maori) Battalion of the NZ Army fought in Greece and Crete, North Africa and throughout the Italian Campaign to become one of thje most renowned combat units in WWII. The Maori element in the book's title means "The Fires of Hell" and the Battalion's exploits in attack and defence often saw this come close to reality. The author; himself an officer with the NZ Army who saw service in Vietnam, interviewed many of the Battalion's veterans for this book, in which he covers its activities from formation in October 1939 to its disbandment shortly after hostilities ended. Its reputation as an exceptional fighting unit saw the Battalion committed to particularly difficult and dangerous actions. These resulted in many decorations for bravey, but only at the cost heavy losses through death and wounding. Wira Gardiner's account of the Battalion's part in WWII is told largely through the recollections and experiences of men who served in it, rather than from the viewpoint of a formal military historian. This enabled him to reflect the personality, courage and the sacrifices of the men of gallant 28 Battalion. First edition of 1992 from Reed, 208 pages including footnotes, acknowledgements and index, 37 b/w photos in two collations. Black hard covers with white spine titles are NF with hint wear lower front corners, internally excellent, no inscriptions.Pictorial DJ is unclipped and is VG+.
