Cloth. Condition: Very Good. John Gilbert; J. Wolf; Birket Foster; Brothers Dalziel (illustrator). An illustrated collection of poetry by James Montgomery. Edited by the nineteenth century cleric and author Robert Aris Willmott, this collection of poetry by James Montgomery is accompanied by illustrations by Birket Foster and other popular Victorian illustrators. James Montgomery was a Scottish born hymn writer and poet whose concern for humanitarian causes is reflected in his poetry. Considered politically inflammatory at the time, Montgomery was twice imprisoned for sedition, first in 1795 for printing a poem celebrating the fall of the Bastille, and secondly in 1796 for condemning a magistrate for using force to disperse a political protest in Sheffield. This volume contains thirty six poems, including The Wanderer of Switzerland, which addressed the French annexation of the titular nation, and The West Indies, a poem on the abolition of the slave trade. With a binder's sticker from Leighton, Son and Hodge to the rear pastedown. Recased in the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. A little bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a small closed tear in the cloth to each. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with sporadic patches of light foxing. Very Good. book.
