Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. This is a brief, but informative, article on early aviation and successful aeroplanes and dirigibles, disbound from a volume of various unrelated essays. It is The Conquest of the Air by Henry Woodhouse, issued in 1914 by the Mentor Department of Science as Serial No. 56. The text is brief but informative, including a short list of books for further reading. There are six sepia gravure illustrations, with an explanatory text for each plate. There are, as well, smaller halftone photographs illustrating the text. Mr. Woodhouse was Managing Editor of Flying magazine. *********************************************** The six gravures in the article are : The First Power Flight / Cutiss Flying Boat/ Zeppelin Airship / The Aerial Scout / The International Balloon Race / Moissant Circling the Statue of Liberty ********************************************* SERIES : The Mentor Department of Science Serial / ISSUE : Volume 2, Number 5 (Serial No. 56) / TITLE : Conquest of the Air / AUTHOR : Henry Woodhouse ( born Mario Terenzio Enrico Casalegno, 1884 - 1970) From Wikipedia : Soon after 1909 he submitted his naturalization papers. He began his career as an aviation writer under the nom de plume Henry Woodhouse (which he soon legally adopted). He was a contributor to such publications as Collier's Weekly, McClure's, Metropolitan, The Independent, World's Work, and the New York Times. He quickly started to gain fame as an expert on the subject of aviation around the world. In his articles Woodhouse prophesied the development and extensive use of aeroplanes by the US military, and later coordinated uses for all branches of the service in WWI. He also accurately forecast the importance of aviation to the transportation industry, and postal service. In addition to his magazine writing, Woodhouse also authored many of the first authoritative books on aviation including Textbook of Naval Aeronautics (1917), Textbook of Military Aeronautics (1917), Textbook of Applied Aeronautic Engineering (1917), Textbook of Aerial Laws (1917), Aircraft of All Nations (1917), and High-altitude Flying in Relation to Exploration (1919). With the support of Robert J. Collier, he founded a successful magazine, Flying , and became its managing editor. It was considered from its inception to be the most comprehensive and authoritative publication on aviation in the US. Despite a few name changes over the years, Flying is still in circulation today, and is the most widely read aviation publication in the world./ IMPRINT : The Mentor Association / PLACE : (New York) / DATE : [1914] / SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : 6 sepia gravures / EDITION : First Appearance / STATUS : OP / PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Disbound article with stitching still neatly attached; 6 1/2" x 9 1/4"; 12 pages of text, plus 6 sepia illustrations with explanatory text.
