Soft cover. Condition: Good. pp36-38. Removed from THE FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, VOL. 38, NO. 1, JANUARY, 1964. May include a first or last copied page. G. In 1964, when this article was written, the author, a lawyer, was probably the only living person to have witnessed the train accident of December 21, 1917, in which 39 were killed and 34 were injured. He had been sent to Shepherdsville, Kentucky to defend the L & N Railroad in a case that had resulted in the death of a small boy and the crippling of his father. After the trial, he had been invited by George C. Duke, the station agent who had sat with him at the trial, to spend the night at his house. Mr. Duke's wife and daughter had been in Louisville Christmas shopping and were arriving by train. The author, declined the invitation saying that Mrs. Duke would be too tired to entertain guests, after her long day. The author went onboard to be introduced to the wife and daughter and then left the train. Had he not, more than likely he would have died along with Mr. Duke and his daughter and 37 others.
