He talked to everyone he met; politicians, wounded soldiers on the battlefield, generals, hotel keepers, slaves, academics and farmers. He visited the slave farms of Eastern Maryland and stood next to General Grant during the Battle of Chattanooga. The diary is extensively illustrated with mementoes, sketches and contemporary photographs. The editor is the authors great-nephew and inherited the diary from him. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling.
