From the introduction: "Walter Scott was born in 1826 and, despite his name, had no connection with the author of the Waverly novels in 1882 he acquired a printing and publishing firm, the Tyne Publishing Company [which] itself had come into existence in September 1880 through a takeover of Adam and Company Scott at first simply carried on the business As time went by, several new series appeared: Brotherhood, Cambridge, Emerald, Half-roan, Hero, Million, Oxford, Union, World's Great Novels In 1884 the Canterbury Poets Series was announced the Camelot Classics began publication in February 1886, with Ernest Rhys as general editor By 1889 the Contemporary Science Series, with Havelock Ellis as general editor was launched. In October 1888 the company began to publish translations of the works of Tolstoy [including] first English translations [some with] new material by Tolstoy . [I]t is not too much to claim that Scott introduced [Henrik] Ibsen to the English-speaking world and thereby changed the course of modern drama George Bernard Shaw too was published by Scott Another famous contemporary author published by Scott is George Moore. Eight works appeared between 1893 and 1895. In the late 1880s attempts were made to gain a foothold in North America [by 1892] an agreement had been reached with Charles Scribner's Sons who went on to import large numbers of Scott titles, many with a joint Scott and Scribner imprint.". Book
Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. In 1882, Walter Scott, a successful businessman with little formal education, found himself the surprised owner of a nearly bankrupt publishing company. Scott had agreed to act as mortgagor for the growing Tyne Publishing Company, but it soon became apparent that Tyne's programme of expansion was too ambitious - the company was hopelessly overcommitted. Scott appointed David Gordon, a dynamic Scotsman, as manager, and the Walter Scott Publishing House was born. Gordon began to improve the list by adding series: the Canterbury Poets Series, the Camelot Classics Series, the Great Writers Series, and the Contemporary Science Series. The company later published Tolstoy and Ibsen translations, as well as works by Bernard Shaw, Robert Blatchford and George Moore. "The Walter Scott Publishing Company: A Bibliography" lists the total output of the firm, from its founding until its liquidation in 1931.
